Default turbo fitted

hi all i fitted my tdo5 turbo to my99 uk last week in prep for the remap
but every time i start it i get smoke coming from around it.
its like steam but smells like burnt oil.
everything seems ok and evey thing is tight.
i just carnt seem to find the leak.
when the engine is turned off i can hear oil dripping from under the turbo onto the exhaust, i think or it could be water. it just smells like oil.
my down pipe is heat wrapped but that would not be giving off this oily smoke would it.
plz help

Hear wrap will smoke for a bit but will clear after a few runs. check the top coolant hose is tight as I had to put a jubilee clip on mine as if you moved it with your hand it would leak.

Is your coolant level dropping? Is the oil level dropping?

Is the oil return pipe that runs to the sump pushed firmly onto the oil return on the turbo, and is the clip on?

If you re-used the oil return pipe from your old turbo, did you use a new gasket, and if so, did you make sure that both the oil return and the base of the new turbo's cartridge have all remnants of old gasket cleaned off?

Are the two coolant line banjo bolts on the side of the turbo tight, and have you looked closely to see if there's any evidence of dried coolant on them? Also, if you re-used the coolant pipes from your old turbo, did you fit four new crush washers? Are the rubber supply and return pipes firmly onto the steel ones and are the clips back in place? Any evidence of leakage from these?

Is the oil supply banjo on the top of the turbo tight, and is there any evidence of leakage? Did you use new crush washers here? What about the other end of the oil supply line on the head?

Answer the questions above in turn and you should track it down.

Incidentally, you probably know this already, but just in case... If you've connected your new turbo up to the solenoid, driving round on boost prior to the remap will likely not do your engine any good. Probably worth connecting the compressor housing bleed nipple direct to the actuator and driving round like your grandmother until it gets done.

How long have you run the car since it was put back together?

Did any on the coolant leak onto the downpipe because that usually takes a while to burn off.

Yes, that's it. Should be connected to a soft pipe that runs back to the sump - with a spring clip to hold it on.
