What turbo do I currently have on my 97 Type R?

and what would be a good upgrade?

I think its a vf23 turbo, and a good upgrade would be a VF34 or a VF35, I wouldnt push the internals that far (about 350bhp).

If its the same as a V3 STi Ra then yes VF23 mate. Here is a bit of info for you:
