I had this problem after i had an high pressure fuel pump fitted, which i believe on my wagon,is fitted in the rear hatch area(dont know what model you have).Had a really strong petrol smell in the cabin-worrying to say the least!
Anyway, the problem was that the seals around the pump hadnt been seated correctly and the petrol that had leaked, mailnly after filling the tank, had perished the rubber(only after a few weeks!).Maybe, that your seals have perished-not expensive,at all to sort.
Probably doesnt,but hope this helps

As above, pump gasket is the main suspect.

I had a leak in the fuel tank on my classic shape 99 car which caused fumes to leak into the car. Cost about 400 for a second hand replacement, or double from a dealer.

Worth having a look underneath.

Sorry guys,
Its a 99 classic wagon,
i hope its just seals-dont fancy paying out for a tank,
Although just had my cambelt done by Gatwick Subaru and wicked service.
And a 1st-after work was done there sent my car back to me with an invoice-when i called about payment i was told that 'we do things on a trust promise-if you could pay the bill within 28 days'--can you belive it?????
