At what milage or time scale should the Valve clearences be done on a Impreza?
What is exactly involved and how much would this normally cost?
just curious so any info would be very much appreciated from you scooby legends!

MY'99 WRX will have Over Bucket shims to adjust the clearances - there is a SST (Special Service Tool) which the Main Stealer/specialists have to depress the bucket in order to remove the shim but still a fiddly job when done "in situ".
STi are Under Bucket Shims are require the cams to be removed to get to the shims so quite a big job.
Are you having running/idle issues or just curious to whats involved ?

Thing is I swapped my 52 plate astra 2.2 sri for this uk spec turbo 2000 Tplate only tidy enough car but no service history and baing a subaru newbie I am just trying to find out as much as I can so I can get the car serviced up to date I have a new booklet and I want peice of mind as the milage is on 103k
Whatever needs to be done will get done Im not scared to spend money on my car in a way Im a bit paranoid about it as its my first turbo car but not first perfomance car I have come from a M3 then the astra.
So just wondering if they needed doing around this milage any help you can give would be appreciated also how much would this cost? and symtoms

If its a standard UK model they are hydraulic and don't require the shims that are used to adjust the valve clearances on the STI heads as far as I know.

Valve clearances should be checked at 100,000 miles or when ever the engine is apart/being re-built ( which ever comes first ).
Shaun - your spec C should have selective buckets - no chance of a shim being flicked out/dislodged at high rpm/power
OP - As in #3 - you should have Over Bucket/Outer shims in yours if its a UK MY'99/Version 5.

So is it the case of...
MY93-96: hydraulic self adjusting - no shims
MY97/98: shims under buckets
MY99/00: shims over buckets
...REGARDLESS of whether JDM, UKDM, AusDM, NZDM, EurDM, RoW, etc...?

The shim is actually part of the bucket joz and you swap the bucket for another "sized" one to gain the correct clearance.
Its done to reduce the weight of the valvetrain and eliminates the risk of flicking a shim out when running 'good' power/longer duration, higher lift cams etc etc.
Left to Right :
STi V2 RA Top Hat ~ STi V3-6 Inner ~ JDM V3-4 Small Outer ~ UK/WRX Large Outer ~ New Age Selective Bucket.

Mick, v. insightful post there!
There's a possibility that I'll whack in some STi 3/4 heads in place of my WRX 1/2 jobs (if I decide to go for 400+ bhp later on). At that power level + my built motor's rev limit of 7,400rpm (so a self-imposed limit of no more than c.7,000rpm), would you say that the under-bucket shims run a risk of flying out?!
If so, is there any kit out there that allows to run shimless on the STi 3/4 heads?!

Thanks guys
Only questions that has not been answered though is:
1) what is a rough price on getting these clearences done?
2) what are the indidcations of these needing doing? (Symtoms)
Mainly because I need my car to have a proper inspection e.g. see if these need doing, timing belt and tensioners replacing, all fluids changed gauges fitted. and advice on any other things that need doing as I had no service history.
To be honest the car has been awesome since I have had it and I thouroughly respect it I always warm her up and cool down properly
Once again a big thanks for your input on the situation
