Default Coolant leak in passenger footwell, possible heater matrix problem?

The car in question is a 2001 bug eye wrx.

When you put the heating on there is a strange smell coming through the vents and coolant dripping into the passenger footwell.

Am i right in thinking this could be something to do with the heater matrix?

How easy is it to get to and what do i need to remove to get to it so i can see where the leak is coming from?

Also if it is the heater matrix how easy is it to change?

A "how to" on this would be very helpful.

hi it does sound like the matrix with it getting wet inside, the bad news is the dash normally has to come out to replace these but not sure with a scoob, hopefully someone who knows will be on in a sec!

Default Heater matrix

I had to remove the dash on my MY99 classic to replace the heater matrix. I would imagine it is the same for a bug eye.

I had to buy from a main dealer as I couldn't source a non OEM part. If I remember correctly it was around £250.

You could maybe try a sealant before tackling the dash, didn't work for me but you may get lucky.

Best of luck

Did you have to remove the whole dash or just certain parts to be able to get to the heater matrix?

All day job and looks worse than it is, once you get started its easy going, just very labour intensive.

Default Heater matrix

Unfortunately the whole dash had to be removed. It is an all day job but just be methodical and if necessary label components as they are removed.

The actual heater matrix is only about 25cms square with two formed pipes connected. At £250 it is seriously overpriced.

Best of luck
