High pitch squeal above 3k rpm! 1998 2.0 sport
I've noticed that my car has a high pitch squeal above 3k rpm when you floor the car in any gear.
It sounds like a slipping belt or air pushing its way out of a small gap in a pipe etc...
The car still runs fine and idles fine!
From what i can tell the noise is coming from the front... i think
Any ideas????

I did think it could be the exhaust as it doesn't happen at low revs and only happens when you rev the car hard.
The car doesn't over heat so i know its not the water pump!
How can i check to see if its an exhaust gasket blowing????

My scooby used to make a screaming noise that sounded like the turbo blades touching the casing but it only happened when on high boost/full throttle. After replacing the turbo, etc, etc, we found that the noise was a blown gasket leading into the up-pipe.
Reving the car hard puts more pressure in the exhaust system, which then forces the air out of any leak (which isn't bad enough to leak under low pressure).
As to how to find it - it might be visable, which would be easier, my garage used an endoscope from the front manifold to see what we happening leading to the turbo, and they spotted the broken gasket that way (as it wasn't obvious from the outside).

well my car is a non turbo so its nothing major!
Took the car down the motorway today and it runs fine however the squeal is still there when heavily accelerating!!!!
I have revved the car to the limiter whilst stationary and the squeal isn't there so any ideas???
car runs fine, no overheating, easy to get in gear etc....

Weird - I had a squeal on a different N/A car, turned out to be a timing belt idler bearing, not sure if its the same sound as yours though but might be worth a look since it may be coming from the front. Mine did it dependant on engine rpm though, so I could reproduce it whilst in the driveway so it may not be the same as yours though.
Scotsman, impressed your garage has an endoscope! Good way of checking the pipework that
