Default Help needed Please, Charge cooler....

Good afternoon everyone

Right i brought my Impreza a few months ago and the charge cooler was not working it was a blown fuse so nice and simple fix.

So the little ally pot to the right of the Intercooler is where the water goes in to runs through the system. Now there has always been water in there, its just up until recently it has not been working i.e. pumping round. So after getting it working i took it out for a run all good keeps the intercooler cool to the touch. when i get back after a ten minute drive the little pot is almost empty so i think air in the system and top it up. I have now put about 6L+ of water in there and its still using it, the pot will sometimes be empty!!

There are no visual leeks in the system as its holds water between drives but when on a drive it uses lots....

Is there any part of the charge cooler system that gets hot enough to evaporate the water?

OR

Is there just air in the system still, there is a large chargecooler to fill some pipes and a small front rad would that really need 8L plus of water.

This is driving me nuts as a cannot figure where it is going....

Any help

Charlie

It could easily be leaking into the I/C and then going into the engine....

You could try pressurising the chargecooler plumbing to see if that makes the leak more obvious.

would it just be burning the water?! this sounds worrying...

whats the best way to pressure the chargecooler?
i think i might unplug it if it coule be doing that. Why would it start to leak like that does it corrode the ally after a wile?

Right Have taken the Charge cooler off and yes it has a leek bugger!....on the side of it is this

Ive found Docking Engineering on the web site.

It says tested to 15psi now this is 1.034212 bar im running 1.4bar of boost. Does this mean that the charge cooler is also taking 1.4bar of pressure inside it? or im i way off the mark..... now 15 psi (1.034212bar)does not sound alot especially in today's boost crazed world...

What are the chances of it been repairable? or is it going to be a new probable expensive one?

The good news is that with the i/c off i was able to check the gear box levels because it is unreachable with the i.c on and it was full and clear every cloud ay......

Ally can be welded if you can identify the exact location of the leak.

And you are right ally does corrode, but an inhibitor should have been added on installation, funnily I waited forever for TSL to get these onto the market. I bought a Hyperflow instead, got fed-up of waiting....

I'd be tempted to ditch the chargecooler for an FMIC

index

Harvey's website is a bit dated LOL

The problem is with that is money plus a re map at the end of it so you probable looking at 700-1000 pounds?

Plus i like the charge cooler set up stays nice and cold even in the baking sun..when its out, plus no cutting and faffing about trying to run pipes....

So im going to stick with the chargecooler, can they be opened up and repaired and then welded back together?

Is the pre radiator built into these units (hence the scoop seal)?

Hello Nick
No there is also another rad at the front of the car that aids cooling with a pump and and swirl pot in between it works will apart from when its giving you poor mans water injection..........! The scoop seal is just to try and give it all the efficiency you can get out of the system as i have said even after alot of chasing about when the under bonnet temps and high the charge cooler will still be cold to the touch..
