Red line is 8k on the sti engines. Not sure what the actual limit is though. I would hazard a guess at 8500 tops.

You can read fault codes by connecting some wires under the steering column and noting the cel light flashing. The archives forum has the how to

hi m8, redline 8000rpm and rev limit is 8250 normally , but you can found in the net that some models depending on year can rev up 8400

don't worry with the 8400 m8 you can rev it this high, the engine was modded wisely, sadly the engine was 12 years old, so it was it time over for my engine , but say welcome to my new EJ20 closed deck totally new comming in 2 weeks!!! arrrrrrrrrrrrrgh can't wait more lol! and in mid october we are back on the roads again !

Your idle problem could be a MAF sensor. Just had mine replaced today and idle is back to normal.

Andy Forrest told me when I was getting mapped that the Type R starts to limit at 7800 then hits the hard cut at 8250. He said you most definately dont want to go to 7800 as the engine starts to run lean at that point.

As said previously anything over 7k is a bit of a waste..your bhp has trailed off before that.

Its defo the Lambda sensor as mine had the same problems on my98 V4 Sti so disconnected the sensor and the car runs perfect now, just waiting to buy another one lol!!!

Ps. I only rev mine to 7.5k, remember that these models have the high lift cams hence the 8250 rev llimit and the engine/fueling would be set up for this, otherwise Subaru/STi wouldnt have this limit set at that level...

Don't forget peak torque will be around the 5000-5500rpm point, so you want to change up so that the next gear drops no less than those rpms, if possible. This normally would mean the change-up point to be about 2000rpm higher than that (maybe a bit less for the shorter-geared DCCD-equipped Type R?!) - so around 7-7.5k should do. Plus this means that you won't be overly straining the bottom end/running into lean fuelling/possible misfirng on the limiter, etc.

I'd defo change at 7k to 7.5k based on this...
