Question When to change spark plugs.....

on a Hawkeye?

Mine is due it's 3 yr service in the next couple of months and was wondering when the spark plugs were due to be changed.

If it's now they are due, can anyone recommend any decent ones to replace the standard ones with. Not sure whether it's worth it or not, i do very little miles but if the price is comparable i might just try summit different.

I'll be honest, my car's in the garage and i can't be arsed tootling downstairs and getting the manual out of the glovebox to have a look. If someone can feed my laziness that would be great

SSS states every 30k miles or 2 years (whichever comes sooner - oo'er)... So if unsure whether or not they were changed at that service, then get 'em changed at the upcoming 45k/3yr serivce.

You sure it's every 2 yrs?

Car's done less than 11k so no harm done but will look to purchase some spangly new ones to have fitted at the next service.

Is it worth upgrading them - car isn't mapped or owt and not planning to in the near future.

Cheers

Perfectly sure, yes.

Nothing stops you replacing every year, say. But you're prob throwing cash down the drain.

You can get uprated 'colder' "7" heat range plugs... But if you don't intend modding the engine, then the OEM "6" heat range is fine. That said, the difference in price between them is not significant - something like £5-10 or so.

Would i notice any improvement with the colder variant as a stand alone item or would it need other mods to get the full benefit from them?

Any suggestions on a particular brand?

Thanks again

NGK PFR7B's are commonly fitted to modded Classics.

But I think the NGK ones for your Hawkeye have B and X (as well as the 6 or 7) in the product code - can't remember what it is, lol.

Had to get off my lazy *** to answer the front door so thought i'd pop into the garage and have a look through the service manual.

The spark plugs need changing every 3yrs/36k miles - it's every 2yrs/24k miles for normally aspirated cars.

Looking at what needs replacing it's gonna be a bit pricey.

GGR's service schedule states 2yrs/30k. Scoobypedia - and a lot of specialists - say 1yr/15k, as Glenn states.

I retract what I said ealier... I would indeed change them every year/15k max.

I know specialists state different intervals for different items but i've only had mine serviced at Subaru so far - hence the service manual schedule being adhered to.

Like i said - i've done less than 11k so not much of an issue i suppose.

What do you reckon then, worth investing in some decent plugs without an iminent remap or stick with standard - any improvement to be had?

You don't need a remap specifically just for a plug change.

I'd employ common sense, ergo:-

* If you don't do too much mileage and/or don't give it the beans that often, then change at 2yrs/30k.

* If your car sees arduous usage and/or racks up the miles quickly, then change at 1yr/15k.

Will i see any benefit from getting a better set of plugs as opposed to the standard ones Subaru will shove in?

I'd fit the colder "7" heat range ones.
