Default lost boost completely

hi guys, i was driving down m1 doing 80 mph. car was running fine, but when i tried to increase speed, nothing was happening, boost gauge was reading just under 0 with my foot down, i stopped, restarted engine, no boost at all. the car is not smoking no knocks, engine light on. its a uk turbo 2000 year 1995 running td04 full decat system, hks ssqv dump valve, , i checked all pipes, everything seems inplace,

took the car out to test it today, i could smell burning oil, n same smell from exhaust, all pipe are where they should be, no split, the rod in the acurator seems in place, am puzzled, could have the turbo died?

thanks guys

not sure what the problem, is but at least if the turbo has died you can put the correct tdo5 on that would have been fitted when it left the factory.

all pre-facelift uk turbo models including wagons had a tdo5 as standard, only japanese wrx wagons were fitted with a tdo4.

you learn something new every day.

i would check that the ecu is the correct one for the turbo then as well.

no they didnt, stick a z4 ecu on uk car you will have the same power as the equivalent import model, as i have already said your car SHOULD have a td05 if it hasn't then it HAS been changed at some point, size of the turbo has nothing to do with insurance.

my94wrx is correct re the turbos.

To Aug 96

- ALL UK cars: top-entry TD05H (front-entry TD04L, thereafter - MY97-00)

- JDM WRX and STi saloon: T.E. TD05H.
- JDM WRX wagon: T.E. TD04L.
- JDM STi wagon: T.E. TD05H... I think?

Yash, what MY is yours? If it's a MY97-00 (from Sep 96) then the OEM turbo IS a (front entry) TD04. Does your inlet manifold have a centrally mounted black plastic coilpack on it?

Coming back tro your query... If you're convinced that all your hoses are on correct/tight/not split, etc, etc, and you can smell oil, then it does look like it could well be a dead turbo, I'm afraid. Are you getting plumes of white-blue smoke out the exhaust?

A test you can do...

- get car up to temp...
- go for a blast giving it beans (despite the turbo not seemingly giving positive boost)...
- come back and leave to idle for 5 mins...
- boot the throttle...
- is there white-blue smoke out the exhaust? If so, turbo no doubt dead...

- Drive it as little as possible and don't try and make the turbo spin very much - be gentle on applying the gas.

- Keep a check on your oil level before and after every journey.

- Don't go on long journeys.

- Take it into a Impreza specialist asap for a second, informed opinion - it might NOT be the turbo and you could be wasting money/time/inconvenienced by going up a blind alley.

the ting ting noise could be the fins inside turbo, turbo maybe on way out,
also check to see if your actuator is stuck.

no it will straight on as long as you have all the water pipes with it, before running the car with the tdo5 on reset the ecu so it re learns to the tdo5

wouldn't do any harm either to get new gaskets

Did you remove the IC to check if it was filled with oil/cleaned it out? If not, and it does have oil in it, then this won't help with lag issues.

Not sure if the 7D is a "TD05"-based map. Someone will be along soon to tell you (I BET it will be myblackwrx too ). If it ISN'T the appropriate one, then the 6K (or 6U? - forgotten) is the MY96 WRX ECU with 260PS - this one's map seems to work very well...

There is of course the MY96 STi ECU too, which is a TD05 based map with 275PS... not sure of the code? 6U? 7U? 7K? Can't recall TBH...

Sorry, forgot you have a UK 2000 ... Those ECU's prob. won't be appropriate due to the more aggressive ign. timing for the original higher-than-95 Jap fuel, at the time (quite apart from a few sensor rewiring anomolies)
