as ariser said-do u know if you still have your cat downpipe on-if so replace that and for older cars a simtek ecu is prob your best bet-expensive but worth it-as your car was around 240bhp out of the factory u may need 2 look at a bigger turbo and injectors 2 get up past 300-also if u have the small slanted intercooler then either go 4 an upgraded tmic or go fmic

You'll need a proper decat exhaust system and either a front mount intercooler or larger newage top mount intercooler mated to a TD05 16G or an IHI VF series turbo and 440cc injectors. Thereafter an ESL 'Live' remap will get you well over 300 ponies, no need for an aftermarket ECU. ESL currently covers V1-V2 classics, and V3-V4 classics coming soon.

I would spend £50ish on taking it to an Impreza specialist with a rolling road and get it checked out before splashing any cash on it.
If you post whereabouts in the country (i guess you're in the UK) and someone can point you in the direction of a GOOD specialist.
To get the boost you're getting i would suspect that there is an aftermarket boost controller/fuel cut defender somewhere in your car or the car already has an aftermarket ecu/chip set.
The Z4 ecu is only rated at 260ps (256bhp) i would open it up to see if there is an extra chip in it
This is a standard early ecu
bottom right hand corner (where the row of solder is) is where extra chips are placed
The cat can be removed as your car has an easier emissions test

If it's running at 1.2bar, you probably already have an aftermarket - albeit probably a non-mappable - ECU. Could be anything: Mines, PP-chipped, etc. If not that, then it'll no doubt be running some kind of MBC such as a Dawes Device.
You'll struggle to get remapped to 300bhp on your car's early little slanty TMIC. Normally in the region of 280bhp is about its limit (this is prob what you're getting now, if running at 1.2bar.)
Ideally you'd need to add a FMIC (or at least a STi 5/6/7/8 TMIC); at least 440cc injectors; a decat downpipe; Walbro 255; and a remap. (You should actually get IRO 340+ on your car's TD05 16g, if mapped on V-Power.)
