Ok i am changing from a two port to a 3 port boost solenoid ,does the restrictor pill location change .Ive seen the on the three port pictures it is in the pipe to the air inlet pipe but on my the two port its in the turbo outlet pipe.

All depends on the 3 port your using, I have a turbo smart and was told it doesn't need one. Mine runs fines really boost gauge tracks the solenoid pulsing opening and closing the waste gate but when it was mapped the boost graph was nice and smooth so think I need a better gauge then the Stack one fitted.

It was fitted with what was in the box and there was no restrictor in it, I've put a mig welding tip in the pipe now to try reduce it, helped a little but not much

One of my boost gauges in the past was doing the same and i realised i hadnt fitted a little jet that came with the kit and as soon as i did it completely sorted it,a nice and smooth constant needle. It may be the same problem.

Sounds it yeah, mine didn't come with no jets or anything so may need to look at that. Did it just push in the pipe?

The restrictor pill on the 3 port solenoid goes in the lower hose

Nope it doesn't thats the factory setup for the early cars, thats not how to install the three port on the later cars and if remapping the early cars should be removed, its a totally different restrictor being 2.0mm bore in any case which is much larger than the later two port restrictors.

No a new age but that makes no difference, as mentioned your post relates only to the MY94-96 cars, and if remapping it should be removed in any case since it actualy slugs boost response, its there to stop over boost tripping the very low fuel cut point on these early cars due to the 1.2 bar map sensor used. If fitting a three port on a classic that has a two port as std then again leave out, you can play tunes of course but its rarely necessary on relatively small turbo's

This is interesting, because:

I had my UK 2000, MY2000, remapped using the 2-port solenoid and then the map was tweaked to add a 3-port solenoid. The brass restrictor pill was put in the hose going from the top of the solenoid to the turbo outlet nipple.

I have recently had some problems with this set up (18 psi): a 'hesitation' at about 3500 rpm which I take to be fuel-cut/overboost (and confirmed by Deltadash - In Car Dash).

I have replaced the pill with a different one to reduce boost (16 psi).

Out of interest I ran the car without a pill and it only made 10psi. This clashes with Bob's comment: does it indicate something may have gone wrong elsewhere?

Thanks
