Smile Short Motor Options

Afternoon everyone,
just a little bit of advise required please. I have a 04 plate uk wrx. What cylinder block would be best for me to upgrade too? Will need to fit my heads etc to it. So which of the below be best to get? im wanting to upgrage turbo etc but want strongest possible motor
1. Standard uk wrx 2.0
2. Uk sti 2.0
or
3. uk 2.5
Im able to get the above short motors brand new.
Any help or advise from experience will be really appreciated.

Best regards

I would go for the STI 2.5 block if you can get hold of it. It is semi-closed deck so is stronger than a WRX block. They are good for about 500bhp-ish

I've done the same but my EJ20 WRX heads are being quite heavily modified so be as strong as possible

I'm having mine machined to match the 2.5 cylinders. They are also having bronze valve guides fitted, uprated valves, springs, retainers and cams, last but not least ported and polished.

I've heard different opinions about just bolting the 2.0 heads onto the 2.5, some say its fine but others recommend machining, i chose to go with the latter as it seems more logical.

my heads were re machined for my 2.5 block. Id say that 500 is on the optimistic side of things for long term reliability on a 2.5 though. Im considering replacing mine with a closed deck stroker block to get me over the 500 mark.

I personally think the OEM 2.0 STi (2001 onwards) is stronger than the STi 2.5 short motor, in standard form.

You need to decide what you want form the car long term...

No worries mate.

remember though, numbers etc are not really important, its how the car feels to you that is more important.

Good Luck with your project.
