Default Air filter vent

Are the smaller bonnet vents just for show? I have a K&N induction kit with scoop above it at the moment. This runs cold air directly onto the filter whilst moving but obviosly get very hot with heat escaping through it when sat in traffic. Also when raining the filter gets soaked! So i've just bought a standard vent to replace it with, but cant see that it actually lets any air in/out?? Will this be a good thing for my car running the K&N or shall i stick with the scoop and just fit the under tray, with some holes drilled in it?

Go completely standard imo,OE vent with undertray (no holes drilled into it).
Better idea would be go back to the OE airbox or if you don't want to do that sheild the induction kit

I havent got a stock air box for it, but like the idea of sheilding the filter from the engine. Got any good ideas of what to use? Would it help to run a cold air feed from the front?

On my 93wrx i had removed the schnorkel from the wing that used to feed the airbox and replaced it with a bit of flexible ducting.
As for the heat sheild i used a bit exhaust sheilding from 106 with a bit of heat reflective material.

.

The stock airbox would be the best thing. Should be able to get hold of one cheap in the usual sort of places.
