exhaust
Hi all i have just bought a v3 uk turbo thats is completely standard
i want to leave it looking standard but want a bit of burble and a bit more power
how restrictive is the standard backbox
what i was thinking was to change the downpipe to a decat and replace centre pipe with a straight through
would this work or would the backbox restrict the flow

That's a good plan, will get you both some more response and some more noise. The backbox is maybe more restrictive than some designs, but it's not terribly bad as such.
Biggest issue you might find with a standard backbox would be that it's starting to get eaten by corrosion - but even then there are plenty of aftermarket alternatives that are stainless and cheaper than a standard replacement at dealer price.

A decat and straight through centre pipe will allow your turbo to spool up quicker,so the exhaust gases can exit through the most direct route quicker .You wont get a much louder noise from your standard backbox even with a decat. I had the standard pea shotter exhaust on my 99 uk turbo, and after 2 weeks i changed it to a prodrive backbox, 1 month after that i had full decat and centre section and the prodrive system was still no louder.
If you check out ebay there are loads on there that you can pick up from £50.00 which will give a better sound than the std backbox. Funny thing is most people who buy a scooby normally change the backbox 1st then go for the decat ,lol
If you do decide to go down that route, make sure you keep your old system incase you dont have any cat friendly mot station an need to put it back on at mot time.

Not a bad choice mate ,not overly loud and a nice rumble when you toe it - tad louder than the prodrive backbox and have seen the H & S go on ebay, pistonheads, scooby forums for £70.00 in mint condition.
