Default how to i.d. gearbox without sticker??

hi there,i have just bought a gearbox,it has no sticker to identify it,is there any other way to tell what box it is (what ratio it is)? the car it came from is no assurance to me as we are talking a 16 year old motor and could have been changed numerous times,i think the seller just looked at the plate under the bonnet to identify it. thanks bryan

not really, diffs u can do but without the car id or transmission id I would say its a strip down job and count the teeth on the final drive (I may be way out here as gearboxes arent my specialty)

It can be done that way but it'd be a pain in the **** and would need a fair degree of prep and attention to detail in order for you to get the gear ratios 100% accurately (easy to mix up 3.333 and 3.545:1 for example).

In order to eliminate slippage through the diffs skewing the results, you'd ideally remove the centre diff housing and make your measurements off the output shaft splines - at which point you can check the drop-gears.

If I was in the same position I'd probably end up splitting the box. Firstly because it'd probably be quicker, secondly because counting the teeth is 100% accurate, no guesswork or estimation involved, and thirdly if the box is going to be open anyway, there's an opportunity to give it a quick check over.

thanks for replies guys, when the seller was identifying the box,he took the sticker off as it was unreadable and covered in crap, hence the no sticker problem,i got the rear diff with the box, so will fit them both for good measure to ensure the correct ratios.it was bought as an ra box so will be apparent right away when driven if its the correct box.thanks bryan
