Euro import 2006 2.5 Impreza STi Overheating - Head Gasket

I've got a 2006 Impreza STi which has done 42,000 miles and it started getting hot but I turned it off before it got to the top of the temp gauge. Obviously it had lost a lot of coolant and after checking, there was oil in the expansion tank and radiator.
My local Subaru dealer have diagnosed it as a head gasket and are talking £2,200 - £3,000 to fix it.
It's only 2 months out of warranty but was imported from Malta so neither Subaru UK nor Subaru Malta give too much of a toss about it.
From the conversations I've had, it seems that head gaskets are going more often with the 2.5l engine than with the previous 2.0l engines.
Anyone got a view on whether the 2.5l engine is more prone to head gaskets going?
Anyone got any experience of post warranty claim on euro imports?

There do tend to be more head gasket issues with 2.5's.
I think that what you have been quoted is on the high side, I would look on here to find a specialist close to you.
Make sure that only genuine Subaru gaskets are used.
