Default Simtek Problems Please Help

Hi there ive just joined Scoobynet today as i have issues with my Simtek ECU in my Classic Type R.

Ok here goes, I had the Simtek supplied and fitted by enginetuner.co.uk (Alan Jeffrey), The car has a decat downpipe, kakimoto exhaust and blitz induction. With the standard ECU it was reading 295hp @ the fly.

After installing the Simtek, it produced 299hp @ the fly with a 4hp increase. They told me that the STI engine is so well tuned as standard, its difficult to achive much more without a bigger turbo.

Also another main concern i have with the car since i had the Simtek is when starting from cold. If left for a few days it just doesnt want to start. If i apply around 1/4 of throttle it will suddenly fire up.

I took the car back to them and they changed some of the settings on it, with no improvement when trying to start from cold. I forgot to mention it also has larger injectors (800cc), do you think this might be the issue?

I have taken the car to another Mapper recently (Dyno Demon) based in the north west. They installed a hybrid fmic, and remapped the ecu from the start.

They also could not achieve much more than 300hp even with the fmic installed, and to top things off it still just doesnt want to start from cold.

Any help or advice would be very much appreciated, im just getting really fed up now with the car as i love it to bits but just dont seem to be having any luck with it.

Regards

John.

From what i've been told the cold start seems to be a common problem ,mine does it, i asked a reputable mapper (Jolly Green Monster) and he basically said it could be mapped out.

My Type R made 303bhp with no mods at all

JGM sorted my cold start problems out and why have you got such large injectors on a standardish car ?

Alan and Martin will be along? , sorry but that didnt seem to make any sense.

Im going to take it back to them in a few weeks time, i just dont understand why they couldnt resolve the matter as they are the main supplier of these ECU's and have mapped alot of cars.

Apparentley the standard injectors were reaching 100% duty around 300bhp, so they upgraded them to 800's, which i had no idea about. I thought they were using 550cc's.

It was producing 295hp with an exhaust and filter which i was very happy with, but 300 with a simtek and fmic just isnt right. Where is JGM based?

Hi John!

As you know, having brought loads of cars to us, some good and some bad, we're always trying to do our best for you.
We know our customers pretty well, and figured you'd want to tune it further, which is why we fitted 740's and not 550's. We weren't that far wrong were we! Your new age STi engine can hold more power than you'd get from the smaller injectors if you wanted to go there with a bigger turbo whatever. As I said the other day, plenty of cars use 740 injectors, they have to if they are going to make the power with some set ups, and there's no reason why they won't start from cold.
As I also said the other day, the chances are there's something wrong with the car. If you can leave it overnight, and it starts, then the cold start set up is ok, as it won't get any colder if you leave it for a few days.
Without checking it out, it's all speculation.
We didn't go any further than 300 bhp with your original set up as your top mount was frankly p-$$ poor, and needed replacing. You gained a stack of torque don't forget, and the car was a lot quicker than with the OEM ECU.
I appreciate you are all the way up North at the moment, but as I said the other day, we'd be happy to check it out for you, you can borrow a car while we're looking at it if necessary.
Just give us a call in the morning buddy, you know the number!

The cold start on the Simtek can be a bit tricky to set up but no reason why it can't cold start sweetly on those big injectors with the correct settings. The std injectors on a Type R would normally be good for 330-340bhp before they max out on flow.

If I had, the Wife would be the first to know about it!
If you had a web cam, you'd see the tongue in the cheek and big grins when I chose the web site for you..
Have a cup of tea and a sit down, the feelings will soon pass.
