I was under the bonnet of my WRX (2004 54) this morning and noticed that something didn't look right. On one of the (water?) pipes there's something that looks like a pressure release valve and I THINK it used to have a black plastic cap on, but now it doesn't. You can see the area I am talking about, circled green, in the photo (not my engine!):


So my question; is this valve supposed to have a black plastic cover (on that STi it looks white unless it's similarly missing) or am I imagining things? What's your opinion on the effect if it is meant to be there but is missing? If there is a cover there I suppose it's just there to stop crud getting into the valve so I guess it can't hurt too much if it's gone. Don't know where it could have gone though!

looks like aircon filler should have a cap on it

as above it is one of the air con pipes, it is a dust cap

Aircon filler valve, dust cap. Makes a lot of sense, thanks for the replies.

I'll have a look for it in the engine bay or under the car. I'm sure I'm practical enough to make something work if I can't find the real bit.
