Remap after "STI8 > Classic" TMIC conversion
Hi guys!
Do i need a remap after putting an sti8 TMIC on my classic gc8? What about if i put a new age wrx TMIC?
Car specs. Motec, VF34, running around 320 hp
Thanks!
Mike

Stick to the STi8 TMIC.
You won't need a remap just because you've changed to a bigger TMIC but a remap could add a little more boost or timing or both across the board as your charge air will be better cooled than the tiny classic interwarmer design.
Forget the WRX intercooler.

Thanks!
So theres no chance of running lean and damaging the motor if i don't remap? Any benefits from the lower charge temps without a remap or does it not take advantage of them unless you alter timing/boost?
Thanks!

Cooler air temps means more oxygen rich/dense air charge so that's good for the engine. However it won't lean your air/fuel so much that the ECU or your engine couldn't cope by itself without a remap. It will make subtle positive changes as it learns cooler charge temps.
Most mappers i know remap for slightly rich AFR's anyway for safety's sake so leaning a little bit shouldn't cause any problems, and if your charge air temps are considerably cooler than before then the ECU will probably add some more timing advance even though AFR's a a fraction leaner.
If the ECU is not sensing det then it may well provide full timing advance (depending on how it's been mapped) because of the much cooler air charge. It's a win win situation for you and as i said you don't need a remap but it may well lead to some very noticeable gains if you do.
For you it's a matter of personal choice, and if it were me i would remap to make the best of the new setup.

Duncan, I know little about Motec ECU's so rightly or wrongly i presume Motec ECU's can detect and adjust for knock even though it's probably running an SD map and therefore MAFLESS etc...
You'd better enlighten us

I've just had a quick look on the Motec website and downloaded/installed the software. I can't see any dedicated knock control unless it can be programmed seperately via a configurable input/output. I've heard some mappers say that if the car is tuned properly you don't need knock control. Personally i'd rather have it.
Like Duncan says...talk to your mapper!!

Thanks guys!
Will check with him. Trying to avoid silly costs i guess is not the best idea (they said they'd charge me 150 quid just to "check" the Ecu (if all is ok), and more for remap obviously, after an sti8 TMIC install.
I have a feeling knock sensing on the Motec is an added function that i dont have on my M800. I think it costed a fair bit more (or was that only for the wideband lamba....hmmm).
Lets see!
Thanks again guys

Duncan,
You say 'full' knock control? Does the M800 have 'some' knock control (maybe a simple monitoring, if that exists?) out of the box, or does it only detect knock with the module installed?

Hi Mike, I just spotted your location. Hot HOt HOT... No wonder you need a bigger intercooler! We manage over here by wafting it with our caps.

Hehehe! I know mate, its crazy hot in the summer (>45 degs)! Unfortunately, because of this heat, scoobies around here are mostly to be seen in the winter only aka "scooby weather". Hurts seeing it in the garage in the summer!!
