Question Whats the differance??

Hi I've got a '95 import classic, with a blown engine.
I'm looking for a std replacement unit. I can't afford thousands for a re build, so i'm trying to find a decent lump where some numpty has lost the car and written it off..
Their seems to be a choice of two engines for this period.
My current piece of scrap has head mounted coil packs. My question is....
What is the differance between the engine with the head mount coil packs and the engine with the top mount coils.

If I change the cam covers to take the coil packs, will it work OK, are they the same engine?

any advice would be appreciated.

Phill
P.s anyone know of a decent engine going for a reasonable price??

There is only one engine for that period and thats the phase 1 unit that you have in your car, from 97-98 the phase 1.5 unit and from 99-00 was the phase 2 unit.
Yours is the one without the coil pack on top of the engine

it would work you need to use you complete inlet manifold and just use the individual coil pack its much easier if you just swap the inlets

I've been offered a complete classic CDB RA engine... I'm told this will fit with no mods, on the wrx ecu etc..
Is this right, what is the spec on this engine.

The CDB will be a phase 1 engine, note that the CDB will give you no advantage over any other engine due to the internals being crap.

Why do people ask for more money for them then?

Because if you upgrade the internals they make a stronger engine, but in their normal form they are as weak as any other because they all share the same/similar internals (which normally end up on the outside of the block when people try to get too much power out of them )

Ah right, so not worth the extra unless i replace the internals.
Is it possible to see if it's got std or uprated internals by dropping the sump?
any markings on the std pistons / crank which wouldn't be there if they were changed?
for all I know it might be up rated, the remains of the car look as if it may have been played with.

As before...
I've found this picture.
http://axispowerracing.net/25sti/20stivsforged2.JPG

( I hope the link works)

I know that the pistions shown are from a different series engine, but are the square markings the sort of thing i'd be looking for in a std non forged piston.

What does a std con rod look like?
what should I look for if it's been uprated / replaced?

I'm guessing that I'll be able to see the base of the piston with the sump off, torch - mirror if needed.

The enging I'm looking at is a phase 1 CDB RA
Any help would be appreciated, pictuers / links even better

Phill

Any one???
I can't believe that no one can tell if components have been replaced by removing the sump?
Surely you don't need to strip the whole engine down, but even if I did that, I still do not know what I am supposed to be looking for.

If its from 'SMR' engines, it will be a knackered, spray painted WRX engine that will last roughly 2 weeks at a push.
