Default Turbo question

A turbo question for you guys on here, not up to speed because I'm a lowly Sport driver. A pal of mine drives a golf 1.8gti and his turbo kicks in at 2500 revs and its costing him a fortune in petrol. This seems really low and his turbo is kicking in constantly. Can this be adjusted as I thought the Impreza kicked in around 3,500?
Any advice would be appreciated

It looks like he should consider the change indeed - the best would be change of car

And it's not actually really a joke after all.

Anyway, the quickest solution - maybe he should also consider changing the way he treats throttle pedal? Serious again.

Ahem, it's usually considered a good thing when the turbo spools and boosts nice and low down the rev range.

Can this be adjusted as I thought the Impreza kicked in around 3,500?
Your understanding re. the turbocharged Imprezas isn't really correct. Most will spool and produce good boost at around the same engine speeds your mate is complaining about, let alone a thousand rpm higher. However, this can be adjusted easily on most Subaru ECUs as the boost map is throttle and RPM dependent - so you can shape the turbo response to be as immediate or as leisurely as you wish.

Whether your mate's Golf is similarly adjustable is a question you'll probably be better off asking on one of the VW-specific forums.

I could get 30mpg if i tried when i had my Scoob (313/300). What sort of mpg is your mate getting? If it's way below factory figures then there is sommat wrong with the car or your mate can't drive for toffee

although he is getting boost at 2500rpm, his foot is surely planted to the floor for him to feel this, therein lies the problem, stop flooring the throttle will see fuel economy improve.

Have to agree, its right foot syndrome, or too much of it, yet in my 316bhp Spec C where the turbo started to come to life at 1500rpm I still managed a good 27-29mpg on a run

firstly as already said,if you have a car that you carn't afford to run then sell it.secondly people go to great lengths and spend a **** load of cash to make there cars spool quicker, why the hell would anyone want to do the exact opposite.
