Wouldn't be a good way for you to do it, no, as aside from any other issues, a "94-98" engine won't fit your 2000MY inlet manifold.

You need a 99MY+ engine to drop straight into your car - although I have no idea whether your import spec WRX is fully compatible with a UK market engine. Would have thought that your first and best way forward from where you currently are would be to find out for sure what's wrong with your current one before doing anything else.

Even if the one you linked to on eBay would fit, a random engine with effectively no warranty and no provenance could easily be a recipe for more trouble shortly.

Why don't you have a word with DavidAPI?

Go api or any off the proper subaru specialists
i live in brum and have seen the one place that is on ebay and never have been so shocked search on here about replacement engines pretty sure that place is one of the horror stories .
Might be cheaper in the long run to have yours rebuilt or find someone breaking a car and go private but run the risk of will it wont it last
firstly call david at api only ever heard good things hth

A big end repair at APi is £1400.00 + VAT [ £1645.00 inc ] drive in - drive out. Proper job, proper parts. Warranty is restricted to crank and bearings, but as that is the part we are replacing that is fair enough.

Obviously we warrant our own workmanship, but we cannot warrant the remains of the original engine, as we wont have supplied those parts.

Call if I can help or you want to talk it through. Good Luck - David

But you see, that nice Gordon Brown is really strapped for cash 'cos he's bailing out all those ******* - oops sorry, bankers and starving Albanian refugees who get more dole than any UK citizen ever will and the money has to come from somewhere

And he relies upon me.

I always say this with engine builds:

I'ts going to be an expensive job and not one you should solely do down to a price (although of course everyone wants to get the best deal)

Get the job done right, pay once!

An ebay special isn't cheap if you're only knocking on APi's door 2 months down the line, cause the engine you got from the bloke who swore specialists were a rip off lets go.

thats very good price, once you add up the new pumps and belt ect and labour of going down the ebay engine route i dont think it would be much cheaper than £1600 and there no warranty. will take a look thru your website

thanks guys

Good stuff, hope it turns out to be something as simple as that. See what I mean about being sure what's up before you go forward?

How old is the timing belt? If it's nearly due for replacement, and if the noise does turn out to be the tensioner, may as well do the whole job in one shot. Depending on how desperate you are to get the car back on the road, it's worth taking the other pulleys off and checking them individually before deciding whether to replace them. If they're still smooth and play-free there's no point shelling out on a full set you don't need.
