Turbo Whine
Hello,
V5 STI 60K standard TD05.
Over the past week my turbo has started whineing very slightly. When its cold it noticable from insde the car and you can hear the note change when the rev's increase. When its warm you can't really hear it until you turn the engine off, then you hear it slowing down and stopping.
I am due an oil change as its been in there for over 5000 miles. Could this be the turbo telling me it time for new oil? I'm not sure what oil the guy who serviced it put in to be honest.
Thanks guys

not too sure with scoobies, but from the old cosworth days i remember that a howl or whine was a sign of a worn turbo. end float on the compressor allowed movement within the housing and allowed the edges of the compressor fan to foul the casing and slightly blunt the corners. This change in dynamic changed the sound from a shrill whistle to a whine.
i may be completely wrong in your case. plus a whine that can be heard as you turn the engine off - i would be surprised if it was the turbo, because at idle its hardly spinning - certainly not enough to create the audible turbulance. sure its nothing like air con compressor or a belt? have you lifted the lid and listened underneath in the turbo area ie top right of centre?

Get a long screwdriver, place the metal end onto the turbo taking care not to touch any moving parts in the process then place your ear on the plastic end. Increase the engine speed slowly and listen to the noise coming up the screwdriver. If a bearing is failing in the turbo you should hear a distinctive rumble noise. Also check that its not a vibration from the heat shield. Even when tight these can sometimes emit odd noises.

Hi,
Thanks VeilsideWRXUK, i'll try that tomorrow.
I had another listen earlier today, its definatley coming from that side. the only other thing I can see in that area is the powersteering. Could it be that?
