well crank is knocking
so where do i start to rebuild?
i dont know how far to go with it
i could just sent the block away and get a reground and new bearings, head gaskets and timing belt job done
OR
i could go for rebore and horn, new pistons and rods, reground crank and acl bearings
timing belt, oil and water pump, all new seals and gaskets, ARp head bolts, cluch
what would you go for?
iv got it very early so the heads should be ok?

The Subaru crank has a specially hardened sufarce to it (nitrided?) and any regrind will get rid of most, or all!, of it. Prob won't last long soon after you get rebuild done!
Do a search for "crank regrind", or similar, and you should turn up many threads. Especially note any contributions from a specialist called API David. He usually goes into great detail why it SHOULDN'T be practiced...

Your best course of action would prob be to find a fully forged (with decent forged rod/pistons) bottom end and get it strapped onto your existing heads, ancillaries, etc.
Andy Williams of Williams Motorsport (WMS) often is selling engines - he goes rallying and is a pukka Impreza specialist/tuner/mechanic too, I believe. I think he's currently got a couple of long engines (with heads) on eBay at the moment. If the heads are ph.1/1.5 MY93-98, then you'd need to reuse your ph.2 heads anyway, as your inlet manifold (with all your existing ancilliaries) won't bolt on. If so, that'd be a shame as yours aren't the better STi ones anyway...

One certainly was! It as an ex rally engine I belive that had only seen a few hundred running in miles or something. It had been built to take around 500bhp! - so obvioulsy had pukka internals in. Thing is, I haven't looked lately, so don't know if it's still available/sold...

Not at all. You have to carefully read any listing. TBH if you were going to buy a third party short or full engine (rather than getting yours rebuilt), I'd only buy one from a reputable specialist, such as WMS, for example.
If any doubt whatsover over what you'd be buying, then, instead, I'd simply get yours rebuilt properly by briefing a well known specilaist and leaving it their safe hands...

think the best bet would be to get new crank with bearings (£510), some new rods (£280) and a set of forged pistons (£400 ish) and put my heads back on,
new oil and water pumps, head gaskets and timing belt kit then back in the car
sound about right?

Agree with Norris re API - it won't be cheap (certainly of you go proper fully forged!!) but it will be done right first time.
API give no strings advice...
Your best course of action is to ring (or email if can't get through). I guarantee you'll feel a whole bunch better about your situation after you've opened dialogue with David. Very helpful, knowledgable and friendly...

I think you would have to give David a call to get prices, either that or drop him an email.
David's email address is on the "contact us" section on the web site. Also I forgot to mention everyone of their engines comes with a modified oil pump as standard
If you want others opinions on them, just put API in the search engine at the top of the page
