I think when the 1998-1999 v.5 came out the Japs had at least 100 RON available, but don't know for sure what RON the v.5 ECU was mapped on. If it was mapped at 100, then I reckon V-Power 99 will be okay, as the ECU should easily be able to retard its ign. timing a bit so that it don't det. But that would mean you wouldn't be producing Subaru's claimed power output of 276bhp (maybe even a significantly lesser figure given the engine's age).
The v.5's ECU is the most aggressively mapped one with repect to both fuelling and ign. adv. IIRC and so is more 'on the edge' than most, so I certainly wouldn't run it on anything less than 99, that's for sure.
For ultimate peace fo mind, get your ECU ECUTek mapped by JGM on whatever fuel you prefer, sooner rather than later - that way you know you won't be risking the engine. Or, cheaper, arrange with JGM to check it on a rolling road with detcans for det and to confirm if the AFRs are fine, etc...
