Default Is my car an STI?

Hi, have got an M plate import Impreza, and as far as I can work out from my VIN plate I have a version 1 STI. Have checked this on the catherineandken list and it says;

GC8B48D, Engine type EJ20GDW2HE, Trans type TY752VB3CA

which according to the site says version 1 sti? This is what it says on my VIN.

Have been looking around on tinterweb at pics of ver 1's and they all have diff interiors and i/cooler water sprays etc, which mine doesn't. Just got plain old red and black wrx seats.Have got the STI brace and lower arms but nothing else. They also have a plaque on the other suspension turret saying what no. etc, which mine does not.

Did they make WRX's with the same model codes etc, would just like confirmation of exactly what I've got!! Ta.

all model codes on the 94 stis are the same as the wrx's as they were wrx's that were taken off the main production line and modifyied by sti. hope that helps mate.

edit to add that i beleive its only a wrx as it's not got the better interior and no number on the turret.

So it's a plain old WRX then! Thought I might have bought something special without knowing.

I don't believe the first STI had intercooler waterspray, there were just modified WRXs so i would expect them to keep the WRX model code.

Does your car have a spoiler like this http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/k...PICT1003-1.jpg as this is an orginal STI 1 spoiler

No, it's got the little tiddly spoiler, so guess it's a wrx then. Cheers for the quick replies though!

hi mate best thing to do is have a look at ur ecu its under the carpet on the passenger side in the foot well its about 4 10ml bolts to take cover off then u'll see a code on ur ecu,
which will tell you what car u have, if someone hasnt already changed it lol
sounds like you have a wrx sti to me i think your ecu will be a SA which is the sti version 1

Got a few things to do on the car tomorrow so will have a look at the ecu as well. So an SA if it's an sti, what will it have on it if it's a wrx?

Just open the bonnet, the original STI's have a load of stuff under there that says STI on it (rad etc) plus it will have a plaque/build number.
Pics would be nice though

Right, will try to get some pics up in a bit but:

Have checked out the ecu, it has a Mines W6. It doesn't have a plaque on the turret, BUT there are two holes with what looks like the remains of rivets in. And it does have alloy lower arms.
This car gets stranger every time I try to find stuff out! It has what I think is an early Legacy engine in- twin bolt coil packs and a VF12 turbo. Anything else it should or shouldn't have???!

Have read that the W6 ecu's should be used with certain turbo's, so will try to get hold of a TD05, then will get it properly sorted.
The plan was that this is a project car, as it looks a bit tatty and had a few leaks etc. Sorted those out, now would like to get it back to a good base to start properly. Ta for all your help guys. If there's anyone around in the 'Stone area let us know!

you will already have a td05 so that w6 ecu is fine provided you re connect the j1 resistor in that ecu or run with 99 ron + fuel.

what colour are the seats? if they are red/black or purple/blac its a wrx.
if they are grey and black they are sti.

if its had a new engine then is possible theyve put a black intercooler on instead of the original silver sti one.

Could be either a WRX MY94... or... WRX STi v.1 - see the tranny chart:-

JDM Impreza WRX, WRX SA, WRX STi MY94 - TY752VB3CA

The SPDA - Transmission Chart

You'll prob have to look at the full engine code on the VIN plate: the characters that come after "EJ20G..." i.e. "...GDW2HE"... Probably differentiate between WRX and WRX STi...?

from the VIN plate the car did leave the factory as a WRX Version STi (it was not actually known as the version 1)

It looks like it has got a bit of history though and had had a full engine change as the intercooler should be an alloy not black one. The original STi also had a TD05H turbo and intercooler spray.
It should have a Nardi red stiched steering wheel and red stiched gear ****.
As said above there was also an STI number plaque on the suspension turrett on the original cars leaving Subaru Technica

I guess after 16 years many things could have been changed. Shame really cos an original STI impreza is hard to find

Cheers
Rob

wasnt quite sure on that 1 mate lol thanks for confirming it seems that there is a lot of argument as to wether or not the v1's and v2's are or are not sti's does it really matter in the end ?
sti parts can be bought fairly cheap nowadays and 2 be honest on the classics ver 1 and 2 there is really not much of a difference although one could argue that some have closed decks , sa ecu's etc etc but as said these parts can be bought i think sti's only really ever made a good bit of a difference after the v3.
solid lifters could also be an issue but have heard varried opinions on some have them and some dont ? it seems like bernie and leepu were building the 1's and 2's as they seem to chop and change

would any 1 agree ?
or is it too early in the morning and my head aint screwed on yet lol

Wasn't the very first STi marketed as Subaru Impreza WRX STi Version (because it was the first one, so, at the time, no need to call it Version 1 i.e. Subaru probably had not anticipated/planned what they had started!... )?

I'm sure I've seen it in some contemporary marketing literature with that printed on...

Type RA is just a lightened, stripped of 'luxuries', ready-for-competition (RA = Race Altered) car, based on the WRX i.e. didn't have the STi treatment.

Type RA STi same as above... BUT... applied to an STi car instead, rather than a regular WRX.

FTR (a couple of interesting STi anomolies):-

For the very first MY93:
No STi variant at all - just two variants available: WRX and WRX Type RA.

For MY95:
No regular STi Version II... but a Type RA STi Version II instead.

hehe

lots of variations - quite difficult to pinpoint what you have

mine is a (v1) sti - altho theres no such thing, its has the usual sti refinmaments - but basically engine wise i think is just a wrx (well it was)

i thoughht mine mightve been the ra model as it has the short ra gearbox and i/c spray, alloy bonnet, but it has electric windows/aircon , so im presuming im wrong.

im guessing the box has been changed at some point - the car was imported with hks ecu, so had been tampered with before export

Right, some more pics as requested:

Front Arms,

Boot brace,

Interior(which has red 'n' black wrx seats and a uk wood?effect centre console!)

Clocks, which I know have been changed as the MOT's go from 50,000 when it was imported in '06, to 138,000 for the next year

And the outside-tatty but no rust. Plan is a full respray in white.
Don't think these will help solve my little mystery, it seems like it's a bit 50/50, half wrx and half sti!
