-urgent- gearbox difference between a turbo, wrx and sti 1996
I am trying to work out what is the difference between the turbo, wrx and sti gearboxes not the dccd type just the normal boxes. I have a turbo gearbox and have had to do the clutch and someone is offering me a sti gearbox and i am trying to find out what the difference is speed wise? can anyone help i only have 2 hours to make my mind up fanks.

sti gearboxes have a different final drive and different ratios ? top end speed seems lower than that of the wrx and especially uk but going through the gears is quicker and obviously you know that the gearbox is useless without the rear diff to match it ?

Gearbox codes would help.

To put it simply, when compared to the 'bottom of the pile' - i.e. a regular UK Turbo 2000 - then:-
1) WRX - shorter gearing (combo of ratios/FD)
2) STi - even shorter gearing! (combos of ratios/FD)
3) MY97>on STi Type R/RA DCCD - ultra short gearing!! (combos of ratios/FD)
See 172sport's web links for specifics....

Remember the STI's can pull another 1000rpm over a std wrx/uk thats why they still have a decent top end speed given the ratio's

dont mean 2 burst ur bubble lol but that gearbox is for UK/Europe Impreza Turbo 2000 / GT MY96 according to a chart so its not an sti one ? is that the code of the one you have been offered or ur own one ???

Sure, but that's just down to the deliberately raised rev limit of STis, because of their stonger engine. Isn't it?

came home today from crail with the v3 ( after the fking place being shut ) lol and going home was a drag sitting at 4-5k all the way home doing about 100 , thats the bad part although from the take off up to 4th they seem to be good but u better have strong legs pushin that clutch in and out all the time with the short gears

to be honest mate if u aint going above 300hpatw then the uk would be a better bet unless u r gettin the rear diff to match with the sti box that u want ? u might get a bit sick of motorway driving with an sti box but its down 2 personal preference

sd20, getting inolved in swapping around gearboxes on the Impreza can get tricky - your best bet is to give API David a call about what's possible as a straight swap (inc rear diff).
He'll no doubt be able to tell you for DEFINITE which STi tranny codes will work properly on your car (if any)...

most tranny's from 94 to 2000 will fit from uk's , wrx's and stis as long as tehy are not dccd , unless u get the dccd ecu and loom ? not too clued up on dccd fitments but non dccd,s should fit even some new age ones fit also

well the problem i have is, i got 304.2 BHP at the flyweel but im only getting just 198.3BHP at the wheels, we are just fitting a stage 3 ctutch because my new stage 1 gave up with 1 santa pod day lol. so i think my old clutch was not correct for the car hence the new clutch, but still i want more at the wheels, oh and i have a 4KG flywheel. any ideas?

if u go to the pod etc then an sti box and rear diff may be what u need as the sti boxes gearing imo is better for trackdays and fast road fun just make sure u get the rear diff as mentioned to match

IF MEMORY SERVES THE VIN PLATE ON A UK MODEL IS ON THE DRIVER SIDE SUSPENSION TURRET NOT THE PASSENGERS LIKE THE JAP SPEC ( sorry ) and i dont think uk starts with gc8 either or i could be wrong
