Hi guys if this is in the wrong section i am sorry.

ok problem is i have 1999 sti v6 estate the speedo doesnt work i cant go over 4500 revs. I went the subaru garage they new straight away it was the speedo sensor but still i would rather pay £45 to get it checked and it came up as the sensor. I changed that today put new sensor in and it still the speedo doesnt work and wont let me still go over 4500 rev what shall i do now will it need to be reset please help thanks

Always worth a reset which you can do manually by either
1 : www.jollygreenmonster.co.uk

2 : disconnecting the battery for an hour or so

 

so disconnecting the battery for about an hour can reset the ecu.. will this work has it happend to any one before

 

Resetting ECU wipes any learnt settings (other than the actual non-volatile map, obviously!)).

So you're telling it to forget about the reason why it went into gearbox speed sensor failure mode. Hopefully, when reset, it should immediately see that a new, 'within spec' speed sensor is fitted and you'll get your full revrange back....

I'd reset it by the 'correct' wires under the dash method. If your car's symptoms was defo because of the speed sensor, then there's no reason why it shouldn't sort it.

But I'm a little concerned, as it shouldn't really be needed if a new sensor has been put in.

If you are saying that you've just replaced the speed sensor on the gearbox, and the speedo still doesn't work, then resetting the ecu isn't goint to help at all - You still have a fault that is preventing the ecu from getting a speed sensor input signal.

Either dodgy wiring, clocks are faulty, or if you have a Kmh/Mph convertor fitted, then that could be the cause of the problem.

 

yes it does have a kmh/mph convertor on it

 

check the ground wire on the ECU mine came loose and the speedo stopped working think its the ECU or whatever the box is under the passanger floor footwell

 

Chances are the km/h to mph converter has worked loose, as fiestaboy proffered...

 

i will check out if the wire or the convertor is loose should that still stop it from going over 4500 when i go over it jerks and wont let me

 

Sounds like its in Limp home mode.

Do you have a check engine light?

 

Without the speedo working the ECU will always limit the revs. Fix the speedo and problem will be solved.

 

yes i do have the check engine light

 

Unless.... the speedo/speed sensor is actually fine and, as daz says, it just happens to be in limp home mode (for whatever reason)....

 

limp mode so that means safe mode.. sensor should be fine i bought a brand new one for it. well got battery disconnected. i just hope its not a big problem

 

how do you remove limp mode

ok guys i have good news and bad news. i just re connected a new battery up the check enginge light has gone off it revs over 4500 revs and my god is it fast the bad news is the speedo doesnt work any one help on this

certain its the fuse?

 

the light will come on and the 4500pm rev limit will return. The fault is likely to be with the speedo converter wiring or the unit itself. You can easily check if the sensor has 12v and an hi/lo 5v output.

 

so it will return whats the problem then.. where is the speedo convertor unit it self

 

any 1 because i need to get this sorted as i have drove it properly at all just been parked up
