Default cam belt

Hi folks, i wanna get the cambelt replace on my car its a my97 sti version 3, and was quoted £240 for the cambelt on its own and £370 with the tensioner, i spoke to my garage and they said i should get it done with the tensioner, to be honest i dont even know what the tensioner is, what is it? and is it worth doing at the same time as the cambelt, how do you know if it needs replacing at the same time as the cambelt?

many thanks
den.

Hi, i had mine done last year it was well over due, cost me £350 inc tensioners/pulleys. When he'd done it the cambelt itself looked fine (it'd done 100,000 miles!!) but the pulleys were all goosed!!
So yes its definitely worth gettin done.
