Default Coil packs??

I have a 1996 WRX with an intermittant misfire on boost which, on reading various threads, is looking like one or all of the individual coil packs are breaking down. A new set looks like around £280 .

My question is thjis would there be an advantage to chaging to a single coil and leads as fitted to later cars? are they better at providing a good spark, is it possible to change and is there a cost advantage? Lastly is that system less likely to breakdown?

Thanks

hi yes it sounds like coil packs, unfortunately they are not cheap as you have found, a few people have converted to running a single coil pack from a later model, i am not sure the ins and outs of it though maybe someone will be along to help.

Thanks for the replies -

Scooby72, what are X spec coils and where do I get them from??

Fiestaboy, how easy it is to change to the single coil pack? for example where does it connect in to the loom? what triggers the individual coils and can it trigger the single coil? have you converted to the single coil system?

And my main question is it worth the bother i.e. better? cheaper?

Thanks for the link, I reackon I will stay with the 4 coil packs at that price - probably not worth the aggro of changing everything at that price!!
