Default Exhaust tones

Hi,

Silly question, I have a decat downpipe 3" to 2.5" with a TSL firestorm backbox, ported headers and up-pipe and yet it isn't as loud or as deep in tone as my mate with an afterburner backbox or another with a ninja, what helps make it deeper, the type of backbox, the size, the type of middle section or downpipe?

Thanks

Too be honest m8 on my old bug eye wrx i had 3 exhaust's for it from pro speed in cardiff, 1st was turbo back system with angled exit , it give off the typical rumble sound but not like the typical shop window shake noise , took it back and for free he made me up another box waited 1000miles and it still wasnt loud enough took it back and he made me up a 10-5'' exhaust it looked like a straight pipe as the box was same size as the tail piece, he started it up and i had the best rumble from it and believe it or not that was louder than any afterburner vortex, so really the smaller the back box the louder it will be m8

you mean as in 5" or 4 1/2 etc, the actual size of the back box, not the diameter eg 2.5" or 3"?

I thought those Firestorms are suposed to well loud? I heard the burnt-tipped Ti-phoon version at Zen, manoeuvering at parking speed, and it was mental loud (but still a nice timbre though)........

What's your centre section?

that's before the back box right?

I believe it's a 2.5" racebox one,
some have a resonator in the middle some don't, which is louder?

Un-resonated one will be louder.

it is loud, just not as deep as other cars, if you know what I mean, just want it a bit throatier, could it be the middle section?

The only way of making it louder/deeper is upgrading to a "true" 3-inch bellmouth downpipe (i.e. with a 3-inch centre-section flange TOO!) and 3-inch straight-through centre-section.

You may have to alter the Firestorm's centre-section flange to 3" to make it fit though, etc...........

okay, so, does back box size itself affect it?

Sorry for the late reply m8, rite basically i went to charlie @ pro speed and said look m8 i want my car to sound mental and very rumbly , he laughed and said no prob, i had a 3'' full turbo back system consisting of a open mouth downpipe de-catted, straight through centre pip de-catted and 1 silencer, the actual size of the back box was 10'' in length and 5'' in height but was angled, like the after burner vortex, il try and upload a pic for you

If the back back has minimal baffling and/or has a minmal sized resonator, then yes, it will make ti louder. Also if its inlet pipe and tailpipe are 'inline', then this helps with more noise, also.

Do you intend to 'rape' your <ahem> back box's insides, then?!

Heres a pic from the side of the exhaust, if you look toward the end of the backbox you can see the slight welding where the tail piece went from a 4'' to a 5''piece, but yea this back box was f.....g loud!

Ive actually got a video of this exhaust to give you an idea of the sound, as the miles clocked up it got deeper and louder, as i basically went to pro speed at 9am the exhaust was fitted by 5pm then went down with the mrs and filmed the exhaust about 8pm same day

I have a Cobra 4" round tailpipe with a slightly bigger concentric resonator (it basically looks straight-through, similar to above) and it's well loud (but not mentally so). I noticed it got appreciably louder when I had it decatted/remapped too.

If you want LOUUUUD, get a stright through custom pipe made - no res./no baffles. Nothing!!!

Or there's RCM's "Team Ice" back box (and centre section). Plus Vortex (or is it Ninja?) do a similar product - see Scooby World's site...

I think I am after a deeper tone rather than loudness, i'm guessing it would be crazy loud with a decat?
Apart from blitz, what are the louder/ throatier boxes?
Afterburner, cobra?
Thanks

i have my cat still on but my cat back is 3" straight through and seems very staright as well, into a backbox with a 4" tail, it nice on tickover but when i give it some i get a woosh sound like when an afterburner on a jet kicks in, it's awesome, but it has no name on it so can't help sorry,

if you can get the system as straight as poss it will be loud as there is no restriction for the gasses
