Wink what gains might i get from a fmic

i recently bought a t reg uk turbo 2000 i came pretty standard with just a hks bov 3in system and induction kit ive since decated it and have bought a fmic kit off ebay £170 brand new there are loads on there if anyone is unsure of the size, i unfortunatley dont have the money to be spending £££s on performance intercoolers from hks, greddy etc with my current mods will this new intercooller give me and gains or is it going to just look pretty? ive been told to take it for a remap by the guys from scoobyclinic will this improve it further? any ideas on other options would be gratefully excepted cheers guys

Sorry to p*ss on your chips but most of your modifications will be making your car worse not better, and given that, by the sound of things, you have an MY99, you are asking for trouble running an induction kit, especially without it being mapped in.

Those cheap and nasty eBay intercoolers are often very poorly designed and in any case you'd be better off with a top mount intercooler, even the standard one, on the standard turbo. There is no advantage to be gained in an FMIC at this level of tune.

Given what you've said so far the best modifications you could make to your car at this moment would be to get rid of the induction kit, refit the standard induction tract and a good panel filter, refit the standard dumpvalve and return the intercooler for a refund.

That should get it to a stable base at which point you can think about getting it remapped. If you want to upgrade your intercooler, the most cost-effective upgrade path is a secondhand newage STi one. Even a newage WRX IC will be better than what you've got right now and they can be bought for peanuts.

I'd get a different turbo (2nd hand VF35 or similar) and then use the mods you've bought along with a walbro pump before a remap and then you'll have 300+bhp

The eBay intercoolers aren't too bad, some people make them sound like they're going to break in to your house and steal your kids while they sleep.. mine was perfectly fine.

You're ripe for a new engine if you don't get a remap/ECU ASAP !

Why did it need a new engine in September 09? Has the car been mapped to this TD05 turbo (and at least some of the other mods)? If not, to reiterate earlier comments, you are volunteering for another blown engine.

All the above are spot on, remap asap or start saving another pile of money for a rebuild.

Get it mapped asap and save a world of hurt and hard earned

Find a mapper, tell them what you want, ask their advice as to any other things you need to do prior to having them work on it, pay them, have it mapped.

whats a remap going to cost?
In the region of £600. Scoobyclinic are close to you and do EcuTeK I think, then there's Jolly Green Monster who'll come to you for a price, Bob Rawle who you need to go and see. Read the forum and you'll soon learn a lot more.

are there other alternatives to produce the same effects?
Short answer is no. You can replace the standard ECU with an aftermarket one but this will cost more again and still need to be custom mapped.

Again, do you know why the car needed a new engine just six months ago? If the car has been running a TD05 on a standard ECU, this in itself could be responsible for pushing the engine into an unsustainable performance envelope and as such you need to know what's going on with the car before you unwittingly repeat the process.

This alone would suggest that a visit to Scoobyclinic, or another specialist, would be in order ASAP, just so you can get a proper idea of what has been done to the car at the moment.
