Welcome. You're going to have to clear up a couple of points for us before we can advise you properly here.

This "'98 WRX". Is it a '98 or 99 model year car (or, putting it another way, what is the Applied Model code stamped on the ID plate on the nearside front suspension turret)? Is it still running the standard ECU or has an aftermarket one been fitted?

Secondly, has the Check Engine light come on?

Thirdly, if you haven't already done it, and assuming it still has the standard engine management, find out how to diagnose the ECU and tell us what, if any, fault codes you find. (Search the forum or Scoobypedia for "black plugs" if you need to know how to do this).

Default as much detail as poss:)

hi again, my cars a 1998 gc8e48d, was told that it was an ecutek ecu when i got car but i dont actually have any recipt for this. the check engine light is not on when cars running only when ignitions on, lost power when i was doing about 60 in fifth gear,no bangs, pops or splutters tho.it is kind off like limp mode, done about 20 miles like this and full boosts only come on once. could to much oil cause this as the dipstick was above max when i checked it? which is also quite worrying as it was low on water on friday night, headgasket was done recently but how would i know if its going again? would that cause limp mode? again any help would be much appreciated as im new to scoobyworld..and its problems..thanks

GC8E means you have a 1997MY car, not a 98, and the lack of receipt for the remap is hardly surprising given that EcuTeK isn't available for either 97 or 98 model years.

This raises a question about whether your car has been mapped (either on an aftermarket ECU or with a daughterboard), or whether you've been fed bullsh*t about this "remap". You need to know what the score is on that before going forward, and so this seems to be the time to call on specialist advice.

could to much oil cause this as the dipstick was above max when i checked it?
Yes, it can. Too much oil can result in the boost control solenoid getting blocked. If you search on "cleaning solenoid" you should be able to find some instructions about how to do this, but if, as you've just said, the oil level appears to have risen, again, a checkover by a specialist will probably lead you to a solution quicker than trying to fix symptoms on the basis of guesses.

night, headgasket was done recently but how would i know if its going again?
Hydrocarbons in the coolant, coolant system overpressure (and loss via the expansion system) emulsion in the oil, oil in the coolant, etc.

would that cause limp mode?
No, it won't, and if it was in limp mode, the check engine light would be on.

again any help would be much appreciated as im new to scoobyworld..and its problems..thanks
We can't help you any further and anyone who posts after this making well-meaning guesses as to what's wrong isn't likely to be doing you any favours. Guesses don't help you at the moment, you need certainty.

If you're not knowledgeable/experienced enough to diagnose the car yourself at this point you need to put it in front of a specialist who is. As above, even if the car wasn't suffering any issues at the moment you need to find out for sure whether the engine is running on appropriate mapping. If it isn't, this may itself explain the loss of power. Even if it isn't directly linked to the failure, you still need to identify what's going on and do any sorting.

Best use you can make of Snet at this point is to locate a good local specialist if you don't already have one in mind.
