Default Head Gasket Advice Pls (Garages / Sales / Cost / Time etc)

oookay, so I went to my mates garage today and he tested for gasses or something by sticking something in my header tank then fiddling with a computer lol

Anyway - he's confirmed my thoughts that the Head Gasket has gone.

So, im in Cambridgeshire / Suffolk area, and im looking for some advice on what sort of cost I can expect and also is there any recommendations from scoobynet members of worthy garages, or even people on here able to do the job?

Worst case scenario is that my mate can get it done, but as he's not done a subaru before he's asked to find out rough ideas on timing etc (eg, has anyone here done one & knows a rough guide of timing) He's told me i'll most likely want [something - i forget what he said - heads?] sent off to be crack tested as well

Any advice / information would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance

James

(PS - mods/admins - pls move to appropriate location if i posted under wrong section - i wasnt sure where to post!)

the head gasket is cheap, about £100. unfortunetly that is the only good news. labour is quite expensive, it is an engine out of car job, so it takes a while. as so timing etc. sorry i dont know!

£800 or so at a specialist would not be unrealistic, assuming no further work or pieces. Replacing the clutch would add less than 10 minutes to the labour in that context so definitely worth doing at the same time.

Personally think you would be hard pressed to get it done for £800. Speak to Paul Gidney at Extreme Scoobies in Boreham (near Chelmsford) on 01245 363623. He'll be able to give you a quote on what needs to be and the costs involved - likely to be somewhere between £1000-£1200 I would have thought.
