bad boost
hi all ,,i have a 1993 wrx import
just fitted a/ front mount intercooler/td05 16g turbo as it had a tdo4 on it ./z4 ecu with stage 3 chip what was set up for td05 and f/m intercooler
ticks over very nice runs well but ,,it starts to boost then cuts out like its hit a wall /backfires and puffs a bit of black smoke out of back box
i have put my standerd top mount intercooler back on,,still the same and re fitted my ecu ,,could the turbo be duff ,, and when its reved hard stood on drive ,,it revs well no smoke or miss
any help would be good thanks

2 solutions (as your symptoms sound like classic boost cut due to over boosting)...
1. Manual boost controller (somewhere like Well Lane can do this)
2. Remap it properly (£600 map is better than a dead engine which is likely if your car is overboosting and therefore running lean due to more power).

thanks andy the only thing iv got difrent now is the td05 16g and the z4 ecu ,,is it the turbo or the ecu thats making it do it ,,i was going to put the td04 back on it tomoz

I would personally call a reputable Subaru independant specialists tomorrow and explain your issue with the exact mods you have. If it's overboosting I would really concern myself that the engine is running lean.
Yep. Got a car 10 years younger (little 106) and £500.

Will hopefully get another Scoob eventually when I'm on decent craftsman/engineers wages and not apprenticeship fodder. Will have to get back into a club scene.

thanks mark ,,im going to try my old turbo back on it today if that dont work ,,i think im going to put it back to standerd as it run well before i fitted the bits ,,and sell the bits ,,better than blowing it up ,,lol,,,

Something has to have moved the fuel cut up as you wont see anywhere near 1.5bar on standard fuel cut, you get to 1.1 then headbutt the windscreen.
I have a 93 wrx running about 1 bar on a z4 ecu, td05 and front mount. 1.5 seems pretty high on a (i assume) generic map chip?
I'm going to apexi FC + commander next!

hi guys ,,,i took it all of today and fitted ,,my turbo ,,my intecooler top mount and my ecu ,,and it still did it ,,,?? some one thick like me had the boost pipes wrong ,,i had the one that go,s near the maff [air intake ] going to actuator ,,derrr, the boost gauge was not far off 2 ,,,,i swopped them around and it boost under 1 now ,,run ok ,,put the f/m back on and z4 ,,it still cut out but not as bad and not as much boost,,but still 2 much ,,so i am puting it back to standerd but will leave the f/m on car untill i can afford it mapping right ,,

back once more,, just took the z4 ecu out to look at the chip ,,i think its a no name thing all it says on it is ,, japan mbm27c1028-20z ,,and sticker on top of it says subarudoners ,,,????? maybe this is the problem ,,,just pluged my old ecu in with the f/m on and it runs very nice and boost right ,,,

one of my mate,s has just been he as the same car standard intercooler /turbo /we put the z4 ecu on it and it went like a stabded rat ,,,its was fast and he said it is boosting more ,,,
the only thing he has what,s uprated is a wellbro fuel pump mine is standard
could this be the problem

take the lid off the ecu and reconnect the J1 resistor. you can then run the original map from the z4 ecu. the chip is probably causing the overboosting.
either that or the boost plumbing is wrong after fitting the new turbo

thanks guys ,,i just dont understand why it run my mate,s car right ,,no over boost ,,or boost cut
thats what make,s me think its the standerd fuel pump ,,
i checked the boost pluming and its same as his ,,,
his deffi,s run at 1.1 ,,,my gage is a cheap swoosh thing ,,
