pwer fc and knock reading
when driving over 2800rpm my the knock reading is varying from 1 bar to 4-6 bars at most,
and last night went high enough to illuminate the cel light, which is now used soley for knock warning i beleive
whats acceptable level, zero, or 1-2 bars ok?

Set to 1,2 or 4 channel showing the knock parameter.... As above, we need some numbers. Also what MY is your car.
From memory, recollecting a JGM post, the basic rough ballpark re max knock (threshold of damaging det) is:-
MY93-96, "50"
MY97/98, "30"
MY99/00, "20"

cars a v1 sti, 1994. that i presume makes it a MY94?
running approx 300bhp

if you press the NEXT button on the commander it should go between the bar setting and the number setting.
when on the number setting, press one of the arrow keys (cant remember what one) and this will hold the peek knock so you can see what number it is getting up to.
if you press next again, you will get the line scale graph thing, showing the last 10 seconds or so. when you giving it some, if the knock slowly builds up in a curve, it is normally just engine noise, but if you get a spike in the curve, this is normally knock

cheers for that mate,
on mine it just goes from the bar reading straight to grahp, but ive not been pressing the "up" arrow, will take it a run tomorow and try get the peak value
hopefull its just normal - but i get that paranoid and dont take my eye off it and cant enjoy the car lol

If you stick it on 1, 2 or 4 channel setting it should show the "on-the-fly" numerical value for the parameter. If it's showing the graph, then as said, press NEXT to toggle it back to the numerical readout.
Also if you follow DaOne's advice, then you can see the peak hold of the parameter. It's either UP, LEFT or DOWN - experiment to find out (the RIGHT button resets the peak hold to current reading).

ok i must be thick, i cant get the knock value displayed as a number, even on 1,2 or 4 channel display.
it just goes from bar reading to graph when i press next next ect.
i got a peak knock value of 27, but that was a good blast touching on 6k rpm
had a few normal blasts and was around 17, with normal driving im guessing 1=7 (thats a guess, given the position of the bars at the when i saw them peak)
at idle and upto 2.5k its zero
i thought i felt a miss-fire at the 6k-ish range when i was failry high speed. but not 100% sure

Right jef.
You're correct, the knock reading only shows horizontal moving LED bar... BUT... if you press the "UP ^" button then this gets you the "Peak Hold" facility ("DOWN V" button toggles off again). This way, then when you go for a blast it'll record and permanently display the highest numerical knock value so far achieved (until you reset it by hitting the "RIGHT >" button, or switching off ign....).

ah i see,
well the 27 was the highest figure i got, and it seems from JGM values above, its acceptable?
ill set the fc to monitor peak knock like you suggest over the next weeks use and see what i get back.
the 27 is quite out of the normal range from what ive seen driving normally - i foolishly thought the norm was zero knock at all times.

Thing is where did you get that "27" from if you didn't have the peak hold feature invoked?
As said, the knock parameter only shows a graphical bar representation of the "value", if peak hold isn't on.

i pressed the up key after a run and it then displays the peak knock value (i think) then press the down key to reset
drive again and press up key and it gave me the different readings
is that correct?
edit to say, im sure i did have the peak knock function enabled.

You can just leave the peak hold feature on all the time. In 1, 2 and 4 channel modes, you can still see the "on-the-fly" changing numerical parameters too, even with peak hold invoked.
DOWN doesn't reset it, it just toggles the peak hold off, leaving just the "on-the-fly", ever-changing readings. If you press UP again, it'll turn peak hold on again and still remember/recall the current peak hold values to date (it's the RIGHT button that resets the peak hold values back to current).
Also LEFT freezes the current "on-the-fly" readings of all parameters. Press again to un-freeze.
