Manifold Cold Air Fan

Manifold Cold Air Fan
Hi all, new to this forum but looking for some guidance for my dad on some trouble he's having with his 2007 Impreza WRX wagon.
He said he got a warning light on the dash and took it to the dealers who said that it was down to a faulty engine unit that supplies cold air to the intake manifold for 30 seconds. Old man seems to think it was a fan unit.
They said it was a £1150 part, and they he'd be better off tinkering with the old part.
Seems random to me, can anyone else help to diagnose wtf they were talking about?
Thanks in advance
ok thinking this may be egr valve related but that can never be a grands worth of part surely?

It would be cheaper to remove it, buy some air pump delete plates from Cosworth for about £40 and then get the ECU remapped to remove the fault codes. Or buy a second hand unit from a breakers. Dynamix was recently advertising one from his STI, he may still have it.

thanks for the replies folks, it's not under warranty anymore. Can't believe something so simple could cost so much.
Will look into the blanking plates option, what's the damage for the remap? Is this a performance upgrade thing?
Will also look into the 2nd hand option. What's the proper name for this kit? Is there a part no?
cheers dudes
