Strange whine noise 60-65mph - rear of car
Hi everyone
Bit of a strange one this ....
Ever since owning the car (19k miles) I've had a weird noise coming from the back of the car. It was more apparent on a trackday when I had the rear sets out completely. The noise tends to come from the N/S rear wheel area (not centre).
The noise can only be heard when I am off the gas - i.e. just slowly decelerating . It is a slight whine/whirring noise (it's hard to describe over the t'internet!) which I first assumed to be the rear wheel bearings.
So I had it down to TrackTorque who replaced them. There was some signs of cracking and they were on their way out. Cracking me thinks - problem solved!
Nope!! On the way home - noise still there.
Noise is there when brakes are on (albeit only for a short time but I hear it), when clutch is in/out and when in neutral.
I wouldn't have thought the rear diff already - the sound is *only* apparent at this one speed (65 down to 60) then goes. I am under the impression that diff whine is there at all speeds just has a different pitch.
Have since replaced rear pads too - still no different.
Any help gladly received!

Hi I'm not sure your set up is the same as mine (classic) but I had the same sort of problem an I found it was the bottom retaining spring on the handbrake shoes rubbing on my ABS ring, I taped them back slightly an problem solved, I hope this helps ya!

I had same sort of thing also on a classic but my noise started on run down from 48mph down to around 32 mph and on more spirited driving all the time. It turned out to be the rear diff and it was the fact that i had a different size tyre on the rears than on the front. The diff was hot to the touch but once the wheels were changed and diff oil changed it went away. How lucky was i.. Hope this helped.

Could be a rear diff. bearing, not of great significance in the great scheme of things, as you'll need an R180 on it soon anyway at 390 ft.lbs....
You should see my lobster impression today, I feel awful !
Sorry,

If it is diff - how come it's just at this one speed? I thought it may have been some sort of resonance through the car.
Lobster impression....??

Joke mode on/
The only F'ing whine is you, shut it !
Joke mode off/
The driveshaft bearing could be suffering under the huge torque yours is producing....
A run out in mine would cure you mine has so many "character features" that it's like CD of paranoia inducing creaks, whines, cuinks, hissing, grating.... etc.
Lobster = sunburn + heatstroke + greasy buttie.
Hope you are well.

Do you own a 54/05 WRX Blob eye?
If so, the harmonic whine you hear at 63mph is a trait on some of these models (I used to own one with it). There was loads of threads on this a couple of years ago.
Some people took there cars to Subaru but I don't believe there is a cure, but does not cause a problem.
If you don't own a blob eye, no idea.

Sadly (!) it's not. It's a 56 Hawkeye WRX
Heard about window seal noises, wingmirror noises etc etc but I would like to know that driving the car hard on trackdays etc isn't going to end up in me being on 3 wheels and bits of the car dropping off (well, no more than usual ).

Having said that, if the rear diff has had regular oil changes, there should be no blackening of the fluid, as the OP described.

It suprised me too John that it was dirty. Car was only at 19k and was totally standard when it was done! Gearbox oil was clean though when changed....
