MY93 ELECTRIC WING MIRROR ISSUE ???

MY93 ELECTRIC WING MIRROR ISSUE ???
My MY93 WRX's driver's wing mirror has stopped working in the up/down plane only. The left/right plane is fine - and the passenger one works totally fine, in ALL directions.
Would this mean that the actual dash switch is fine... but that the driver side motor's "up/down servo" has failed (or maybe the connections to the up/down servo - if it works like that?).
Would my best course of action be to simply buy a fully working 2nd hand replacement wing mirror (in the correct 262 silver) and simply wire it up/bolt it on, etc.
Regards, from a particularly disgruntled joz lol

Thanks for the reply.
Not yet - it stopped working only this morning on way to work (at work at mo ).
But yes, it could well be that, as it would (very infrequently, it must be said) not work... then work... etc. So does sort of point to corroded contacts/dry joint, etc...
Anyone else?...

Check the wiring first, especially where it crosses the door pillar, and where it passes into the door.
Then check the mirror by plugging in the one from the passenger side to the wiring on the driver's side: (you will need to remove both mirrors to do this: door cards and the small plastic triangles that cover their rears). If it all works fine, it's the mirror, no solution really except a new one/breakers/ebay.
If it STILL doesn't work, it's probably the switch, again, a new one etc.
Do your mirrors fold electrically? If not, I have a good switch in my garage

Thanks - yeah, that'd be the 'obvious' test to try.
No, I don't have the folding mirror combo switch. Can non-folding mirrors fold in if you use a folding-mirror switch? Presumably not?
How much of a ballache is it to remove the doorcards/that triangle cover thing, etc?

No mate. If you mirror IS duff, you could look for a pair of folding ones, easy wiring mod and away you go. You DO need the switch too though. I got mine in dark blue for £20 the set, resprayed, they now work great

Got a set of MY00 UK Turbo mirrors here, in Royal silver - not electric folding - if they are any good to you. Was going to fit them to mine, but prefer electric folding.

The whole job takes half a day, at most.

Don't touch the large screw in the centre of the pull handle though.

As stated, the triangle bit prizes off, the door card is two screws, one under a cover near the front edge, une under the window swithes once they are prized up, the handle surround and window switches prized out, window switch disconnected, and series of clips along the bottom of the door card, then lift it and pull towards you. Takes all of ten minutes

Early classics, there's a screw in the interior door handle that needs removed, and the window switches are separate from the door card.
Yours must have a facelift interior?

So just to be sure, the early MY93-96 door cards DO require the door-handle's central screw removing, but the window switches remain in place, right?
Other than that, it's follow Alcazar's instructions in post #10?
Ta.

Joz, I gave a little incorrect info regarding the swiches, but it's neither here nor there, had been a while since I'd had the door card off.
So, I went out and removed a door card, and took some photo's.
1st remove the screw in the pic below and take out the plastic pull handle;
Next remove the trim around the lock handle thing, might need a flat screwdriver to prise it, little bit of jiggling gets it out. See the 2 pics below, don't remove the screw behind the trim;
Finally, in the pic below, it looks like a screw cover. It's not, just a pop clip thingy. Start there, and work your way around the edge of the door card to pop them out.
When they are all loose, lift the door card of the lip of the door and undo the wiring plug for the switches;
The mirror screws are behind the triangular cover, which just prises off;
Et voila;
In true Haynes style, refitting is the reverse of removal.

F***ing A!
That's excellent - just what I needed. Amazing how a walkthrough, complete with great pics, instantly boosts one's confidence, etc. I have no qualms in tackling that now. I appreciate your Herculean efforts micky (and alcazar).
Just one small q: how many of those plastic popper things are there to prise out lol?

Now get out there and pull the door card off!!
Do you want me to send a mirror down to you to try? Would help to rule out the mirror as definitely being at fault.
Let me know soon, and I can have it with you for Saturday morning. Will go and test on my car to make sure they still work, they've been sat a while in the dining room.

That's an extremely generous gesture. Schucks
I did PM someone that has (had? ) a pair of mirrors in the correct 262 for only £20. I'll wait to see if he responds over the bank holiday.
If no joy, then I'll get back to you micky....

Gimme your address John, and I'll send the drivers side one down. It's only a loan, use to test and I'll get it picked back up. Won't cost me anything to send or collect.

micky, triple whammy!:-
1) door card off - 1-2min job (gotta be one of the simplest door card fitments ever lol)
2) your mirror confirms my mirror was at fault - your mirror works perfectly...
3) ...but now my mirror is back to working fine, regardless! Must've been the unplugging/plugging of the connector, or me manually clicking the mirror in and out. Looks like, therefore, my contacts are prob corroded... but, whatever, back to working at the mo....
Cheers micky, this has worked out better than hoped - the best possible result!
How do you want to go about retrieving your mirror, etc.?

micky, I don't suppose you have, or know of anyone else, that has a driver's door card exactly like the one in your pics for sale?
My one has the same insert pattern but, unfortunately, the whole card is a little worse for wear.....

Will ask about up here to see if anyone has one mate.

Incredible: I had a problem recently where BOTH channels on a decent stereo, lost all bass on CD.
Pulled out the phono plugs off the CD player and pushed them back in: it's back
There's no wonder most people won't touch electrics, it's white man's magic, I tell you...........

Yeah, the vagries of Witchcraf... er, I mean electricity!!!
Funnily enough my OEM radio/cass's radio tuner stopped working all of a sudeen some time ago. Can I make it work?! NO! The rest of it works fine, etc. And I've replaced the roof ariel/lead too!
And before you ask, it ain't the HU either - the problem has spookily 'transferred' itself to a new, more modern Sony HU!!!
I give up!
