if its a newage wrx. then you will be just running on borrowed time. as the gearbox or engine could let go any moment depending on use. if you had a sti. then things would have been different.

the 2006 2.5 wrx is a five speed box i've got cometic headgaskets in and know that the internals are good for 380 to 400 bhp. know what your saying about the gearbox though. i want about 350 bhp as i'm used to the car now and want more wooph .
any ways tdo5 18g or vf34

I've got a 20G on my 2Ltr and it's very good although quite laggy compared to my old VF35, an 18G would have been better, however the VF34 is a roller bearing turbo and will spool up a lot quicker and much earlier than the 18G and still deliver 350bhp all day long.
IMHO i think the VF is better suited because on a 2.5 it will be spooling up and on song from about 2500rpm. The 18G won't be doing it's thing till about 2800/2900rpm. On a WRX specifically i would go the VF, it's boost delivery is well suited to the 5spd box and will give you a shed load of torque from very low down.
If you had a 2.5 STi i would have said a 20G because it works much better with the AVCS properly mapped, spooling up by about 3000rpm.

as i own the exact same spec as youre currently running, i've researched the exact same question.
Its to my understanding from research that the 06 wrx's are alot 'STRONGER' shall we say than previous newage wrx's. One main point being gears. Also, 06 wrx's dont NEED an injector upgrade as the standard are alot more high flowing than previous years.
Harvey smith said an 18g ported suits the 2.5 well for spool and every day use plus prevents the boost creep 2.5s are prone to.
Plus if you get in contact with duncan at racedynamix he has mapped many 06wrxs with 18g's and v43's and said all have had good results and been strong. As long as you dont continuously do standing starts/drag/track days you should be ok with daily driver duties....the only recommendation was an upgraded clutch..not necessity though.
....As i said though, this is only stuff i've found out through asking around the exact same questions as you probably have. No experience myself, but i will be going down the 18g route myself..from either andy forrest or harvey smith.
Hopefully one of the boys with this mod who duncan mapped in the 350bhp area with standard gears is reading this and can confirm how its going!?

i ran a hawkeye wrx with a td05 16g mapped at zen running complete decat and it made 340x340 at powerstation. i would go for the 18g personally !! low down torque of the 2.5 lump is pretty good and as i am hearing is good for 400 b.h.p and as much torque !! just get in touch with a few mappers and ask them !! simon at jolly green is very helpfull !!

i think maybe the question now is going to be....where will you get the 18g from
andy forrest and harvey smith have very good reputations. Avoid the taiwan type ones! Heard some terrible stories about zage
Blouch? Do LATERAL or AET do 18g?

In my experience the 5 speed new age gearbox is fairly rugged and certainly well able to handle an 18G. There will always be people who break transmissions because they are hashy but avoid clonking with heavy clutch release and the new age five speed will handle 400 bhp comfortably.
The 18G would be my choice every time but I am biased but from my extensive mapping experience on 18G VF34 and VF35 there is no doubt in my mind that the 18G is the way to go. It also represents fantastic value for money.
P.S. Mappers with independant experience of my 18Gs will include Bob Rawle, Dynamix and Pat Herbron and all of them are happy to recommend the 18G
