Default Oil smells very strongly of petrol?

I checked my oil today and again tonight and my oil on my dipper stinks really strongly of petrol, it is also very thin and drips very easily of the dipstick. A well known tuner told me my ecu is retarding my ignition quite aggresivly. Seems so obvious now, oil lubricates your engine makes everything run smooth. My oil is very thin not gloopy at all, can't belive I didn't check before now, do you think oil like that would cause enough knock for the knock sensor to do it's thang and save my engine. I'm really hoping so, i will drain every last bit out and flush it Tomos and fill with correct oil first thing. Anyone know best oil for 93 import wrx but mainly want your view on the petroly oil and the Chance of it causing ecu to retard ignition. My cars bin bugerd for a while and no one has been able to fix it I'm hoping a simple sniff of the dipper has found the little head scratcher?

You need a specialist tuner to check that out urgently. It sounds like it's running very rich. If it's a classic a common fault is a leaky injector seal, which means it'll just drip feed fuel right in.

cheers alan, Strangley last week i was told the opposite, That my car was leaning out quite bad, They fitted a fuel presure regulator which they say has cured that. My car is just having the oil out now and being flushed will be back in it in ten mins, Gonna take it for a ten mile slow drive then reset the ecu and see what happens will report back shortly. If it had ther comon fault u mentioned how easy is it to replace the gaskets . Is it something i can do myself?

OMG IV FIXED MY CAR

Put new oil in and it is like a new car, It really is. Didnt even have to reset the ecu within 10 miles my car was sorted no judder no stutter nothing, just clean burst of power. Drove round the a roads for 30-40 mins with no issues so thought now for the real test, took her on the motorway, and for the last three months it would sometimes boost properly but not very often but i would never boost right on the motorway in 4th and 5th, But not now, straight up through all gears with good clean boost, I am so very happy. If you read my previouse threads you may know how much this car has pi%$ed me of since the day i bought it 3 month ago, But heres a breakdown of what i think happend for other juddering subaru owners as there a quite a few.

bought it, car was fine for 100 mile but had not done even 500 over the last 3 years, so when i got in it and started mistreating it racing around the day i bought it i think one of the coils went, which started making my car judder and missfire, that got worse and worse untill it was really bad and not boosting right about 80% of the time. while this was happening it was feeding fuel into my oil. When i got new coils it became a different problem which was the fact petrol was making the oil thin causing engine noise which triggerd my knock sensor to reatard the ignition.

All is fixed now i took it for a hours testdrive to make sure with no issue at all.

Now i can start to engoy the car i bought three months ago.

Just hope its the last thing for a while, Not much else could go wrong now iv replaced everything lol

Hmmm. Hopefully you've sorted it out but if I were in your shoes I would not assume that the car is fixed just yet. As things stand taking Alan's advice and getting the car looked at by someone who knows their stuff would probably be a worthwhile precaution.

Even though you say it's driving fine right now, if your old oil was heavily contaminated by fuel, chances are whatever caused it is an ongoing problem likely to affect the new fill too. That petrol had to get in there somehow - unless you or a previous owner has done something really dull, like pouring fuel into the oil filler?

As a matter of interest, what was the level shown on the dipstick by the old "oil"? Was it around the normal levels or was it very high?

Incidentally who told you your car was leaning out, and is the fuel pressure reg that's been fitted a new standard one, or an aftermarket one? When the reg was changed, did the mechanic check the vac pipe between the inlet manifold and the FPR for splits?

As above, without wanting to rain on your parade unduly, it would be safer to be cautious and get some expert confirmation than assume your car's 100% sorted here. Hopefully it is, but if it isn't, it's better to know now and fix the problem than "enjoy" it on a continuing (or worsening) problem.

cheers splitpin, Car has been to three places now but no one could find the issue, But now that this has happend they will be able to look for the specific cause of the cotamination and hopefully get to the bottom of it, I belive petrol can be forced into the oil because of a missfire, which was happening very regular when i had bad coils, but also heard its quite common for the gaskets on the injectors to leak into the oil? scooby clinic did fix 3 faults on my car inc fpr but i belive that was a used original one, which i didnt mind (a lot cheaper) when they fitted it it put my afr to 1.2 which i belive is right, But these fixes did not stop it from juddering, But now i am booked in for sat for a full health check and refill on all levels and a power run i will get them to check for possible reason for contamination. One thing is definate and that is that it really is like a new car so that was what was causing my issues, but will now as you say have to find why it happend to stop it from happening again. What reasons do you belive this would happen??

Thanks

Chris

also the first people that had my car (car planet) fitted a boost tee mbc, Which i dont think i needed, And the pipe going from the boost controller to the actuator, the pipe is stepped down then stepped back up for some reason with connectors, so just been out and bought the correct pipe from boost tee to actuator all one thickness so tonight im going to re-plumb the factory boost selunoid with correct pipe, Iv checked all pipes for leaks and not found any splits, do you think i should plumb back up the original boost selunoid as the mbc bypasses the whole thing?

splitpin you were right of course, After 3 or 4 hourse of driving it she started to do her old tricks, so got straight out and smelled my dip stick and what do you know it stinks of fuel again, its actually worse this time really dripping of the stick now, i also realliesed i was useing an awful lot of petrol a lot more than usual, How can it fully contaminate to that level in four hours, Obviously gonna get it to someone asap now. Im not to unhappy because i know iv found the prob with my car atleast, putting that oil in yesterday fully sorted it, until fuel got in, now i need to find out why fuel in pouring into my oil, any suggestions?

- Incorrectly fitted injector/s
- Knackered/misplaced injector seal o-ring/s
- Internal engine fault - such as leaking pistons rings.

Probably others too...
