they are totally different, 99 coil has male contacts on it for the lead (like the end of a spark plug) the 97 has female ones. The coil is off centre on a 99 car so have unequal length leads. New phase one coilpacks are the best option for a phase one car IMHO, more compact, less hassle, neater and they work fine if in good nick with decent plugs and an ECU that's firing them properly.

What Paul said. The coilpacks are completely different both physically and in electronic design - the 99/00 one has the amp built in while on the 97-8 it's separate.

Ahhh, you've preempted me Paul.
I was indeed considering the MY97/98 HT lead/central coil set-up as someone had done it and said that because the coilpacks are not on the plugs and not in arduous surroundings, then they will last longer.
You're saying different, so that's good enough for me (esp. as my ph.1 coilpacks are only 21 months old, anyway
).
