Default What air pressure in wrx 17" alloys

Hi all,

Could you help me:

I have a classic with the 17" bugeye wrx type alloys the twin 5 spokes.

has 205/45/17 tyres

What air pressure do i inflate to as i have checked my manual and it tells me for the standard 15" classic alloys

Cheers

Rich

From memory, 33psi front; 32psi rear are OEM pressures for the OEM tyre sizes of 205/55 R15 and 205/50 R16.

I suppose you could argue that with the lower 45 profile, rather like a bike tyre needing lots of pressure, you could it a bit to, say, 35 fr; 34 rr, for example.

What I'd do though, is start off with the 33/32... then experiment either side of those pressures to get the tyres' "feel" just how you like it...

according to the sticker inside the door of my 99 UK Classic, it's 32psi front & 28psi rear for the 205/50/16 tyres

I also run the newage WRX alloys with 215/40/17 tyres and I'm running the same tyre pressures as for the standard ones, which seems fine

be interesting to see what the pressures are meant to be for a bug or blob WRX with those wheels in comparison

the Classic is a much lighter car though, so pressures should be lower to compensate

as an interesting point, like many others, i get a noisy transmission sound on overrun in 2nd and mildly in 3rd, i saw a big post on nasioc about this, (mainly newage wrx's) and one suggestion was a 4psi differential between the front and rear tyres, i have been trying mine with 35psi front, 31psi rear, and i kid you not, the noise has all but gone!. i have yet to find out what this pressure is like under extreme handling though.

so you're saying that with the same tyre pressures all round you had some transmission whine, but with the 35psi front and 31psi rear it's now gone

interesting

Very interesting. I tried the same thing a few years back. Couldnt work out the constant whine...

Then got divorced and suddenly it just went

not gone completely, but 80% quieter, not a whine, (i don't suffer with a whine when accelerating), but on overrun / deceleration, esp in 2nd when warm, a kind of noisy bearing sound, like a noisy clutch release bearing. it's been there for 2-3 years, but tried the new pressures and it's almost gone. I don't completely understand why, but it apparently is something to do with equalising, or altering the ratios very slightly between the front and rear diffs. if i can find the link i'll post it.

edit here's the link, although they seem to using a 3psi difference. http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/arch.../t-103494.html
