Default rear brakes

Hi all.. i am trying to fit some rear subaru 2 pot callipers and 294mm discs to my 96 sti which comes with the older callipers and smaller discs on the back.. the backplate dont fit right, any ideas?? i think i may need some kind of brackets/spacers or maybe just later back plates..?

Anyone tried doing this or can give me some advice??

Yeah you need the Godspeed extender brackets for the OEM 2-pot rear calipers. You can also get these brackets on eBay:-

SUBARU 2-POT BRACKETS

FTR, the "correct" size disc for the 2-pots is 290mm (but 294mm ones doubtless will go under too).

If its just the backplate you are having issues with, then you must have the caliper brackets already. The old backplate will need to come off. You can drill out the spot welds, but mine just pulled off by hand.

I'd suspect they won't, as 294mm Impreza discs will invariably be for the front.

One would imagine this is a simple typo/substitution and Bob's discs are actually 290's. As you say, the Godspeed/fleabay/etc brackets should sort. Also note Bob, if you don't already know this, that the stone deflector around the existing backplate needs to be removed before the new discs will fit on.

Sure they are - but do you really reckon the extra concentric 2mm width will cause fouling?

Or will it be the fact the 294mm ones are 24mm thick, and therefore won't fit inside the calipers' space?

I strongly suspect it's a moot point. If Bob was to put a ruler on his discs, I would bet a knackered old fuel injector that they'd actually be 290mm in outside diameter. That's the standard size for the Subaru two pot rears, there's no point making them oversize when the pads won't sweep the extra (which will just start to lip over when the discs wear), and when the clearance to the caliper is going to be an issue.

Oh yeah - I'm not suggesting Bob's are 294 (I'm sure its a typo from the OP as you suggest - Bob's bound to sell the correct 290 ones blah blah...)

I was just musing over if you did actually attempt to fit the OEM front 4-pot 294 ones to the rear, whether those would fit also...........?

They wouldn't, and it'd be a far bigger issue than just the outside diameter.

Don't forget that Subaru rear discs have an integrated handbrake drum...

hi guys thanks for that.. i suspect that they probably are 290mm.. i got the discs and rear subaru 2 pots off the same guy who had them on a later wrx..

Joz - with regards to the stone protector i realise this will have to come off.. would you look to then alter it and put it back on or just leave it off??

I'd prob leave it off actually - that way stones can never get trapped behind it and cause annoying noises...
