Thought it was only added when coolant started seeping out of 2.5 NA blocks, some years ago.

Am I barking up the wrong tree then??
Maybe just the coolant I need then?
Funny how the water has all of a sudden just gone black don't think its oil because it hasn't separated just very dirty, I'm going to keep changing the water in the overflow reservoir till it runs clean then i will add the coolant. don't want to get any air in the system, its all ready got some in the heater matrix as you can hear it when I rev it gently.

Going black doesn't sound good neither is the air in heater matrix.
If you take either rad cap off is there little black bits floating on top?

There's always been a little air in the matrix, A lot of impreza's have this problem doesn't seem to be an issue (yet )
No black bits in the rad but there was a few in the reservoir but they where mostly floating about and at the bottom.

It used to have the genuine Subaru coolant in it when I had it serviced on 30000 miles. Now its done 52000 but the specialist who done my cam belt change said he had to take the rad off to get to the belt so maybe then, but he never mentioned anything about the dirty water, I would have thought he would have just topped it up with water rather than using coolant anyway

All the coolant gets dumped when the rad comes off so it either gets collected and reused or brand new coolant goes in.
Does the expansion bottle fill up to the top with coolant after using boost?
