Assuming you've bought an STi version 5 or 6 engine, you'd be looking at loom, instrument cluster, possibly DCCD controller if you have a Type R/RA box, and engine ECU. Plus smaller bits like the IAT sensor, intercooler water spray system (if you wanted to install it)

If you've got an engine from a car other than a 5/6 (especially an older one), then you're going to have a headache.

Inlet Air Temp sensor, although by the sound of things that may be the least of your worries.

When you say it's come out of a '98 reg car, is it a version 4 (98MY) or an early version 5 (99MY)? Is the ignition coilpack in the centre of the inlet manifold, or on the left hand branch (i.e the same place as on your current engine)?

Ooops. You've bought a version 4 engine, presumably with its 752 case gearbox. That's going to be a mare to get running in a 99/00 car, and isn't as good as STi5/6 bits anyway. Did the engine and box come with the correct rear diff and back end btw?

You were told wrong. The fundamental problem is that the engine management on a 4 is completely different to that on a 5. You can get anything running if you dick about enough, but this would require a lot of dicking about and leave you stuck up a bit of a creek, in a number of ways.

R1c's suggestion is realistic. You'd be better off getting rid and working with what you've got. At least the ECU in your own car is mappable.
