1999 CLASSIC PETROL FLAP RELEASE ISSUE...!?!
My petrol flap doesn't engage with the little white release rod when you close the flap shut.
It looks like the rod isn't protruding enough, so doesn't actually meet up with the flap's locking tang. Is there any way of fixing it?

with the petrol flap open, try the cable a few times manually, via the tag from inside the car, get some pliers on the white tang and try nd pull it out a bit or manipulate the petrol flaps tang over a bit to grip onto the white spring bit

I just have a white cylindrical bit, about 10mm long that protrudes out from the black cable. Is this normal? Is this the movable "rod" (that engages with the flap tang's hole), or should there be something else attached to its end, that's missing?

Hoot!
The nipple moves in and out on the in-car lever fine - just don't engage. If I bend the tang towards it a bit, the flap won't shut flush and engage.
Looks like I'm gonna have to bend that tang around so that it creates a curved corner, so as to smoothly engage with the nipple and push it back in, before springing back out again and engaging into the tang's hole...

Rig - or anyone - can you help?:-
Went to see Olly at RCM and he looked at it and said there's a spring missing(?). Now I don't know how the mechanism works as such, so do you know what he's on about/how this spring fits with the rest of the mechanism, etc.?

Either removed - but more likely fallen off
I'm sure getting it back together with a new spring, etc. ain't a problem.
MY problem is that I don't know how/where the spring fits. I need it to be explained to me, etc...

thing is, even if a spring were missing, can you pull the white tab out further than it currently is (as if a spring were behind it ?)
if not, im doubting thats the problem, but starnger things do happen, just seems weird a person would remove such a thing ??

That white nipple is defo spring loaded. It flies back out under tension, when you let go (obviously after first pushing it in). It defo works via the in-car lever too.
Is there supposed to be another spring (based on what Olly said), then?

Ahhh, "spring behind white tang". Now I'm getting somewhere - this must be what's missing!
Can you get a camera phone in behind the tang to take a photo of how that spring attaches to the tang and flap etc.?
(Nipple is the same )

Right, looks like I have a different (wrong!), unhinged (how apt! ) tang to my flap!:-
This is obviously why I can't get the nipple to recede - as I haven't got the spring-loaded, hinged tang to my particular flap! Therefore looks like the wrong type of flap is fitted! But How come though?!

yup,that`ll be your problem !
it needs to have the curve as on mine to push the white tang back when you push the fuel flap in
but as you say, how come, surely all classic fuel flaps are the same, guess not ??!?!?
at least we got there in the end ha ha !!

So it looks like it's eBay time! (I'll have to to politely ask the seller to show me a pic of the lever mechanism...........)
Cheers Rig - thanks for investing time in this. I would have posted a pic earlier on, but at the time didn't realise the mechanism COULD differ!
Nice one

Totally!
But like you, because it wasn't there, how were we to know!
It was only after a while, that I actually found out about that extra part of the fuel door set-up!
