can anybody help me with a problem on my 99 subaru impreza uk spec when i am driving i get a loud howling noise from the front i take out ov gear but the noise is still there but wen i touch my brake pedel the noise goes many thanks with the repiles [howling,droning,humming] is really pissing me off now

 

Wheel bearing gone? Touching the brake recenters it all and stops the noise.

Jack it up and see if one of the wheels wobbles.

 

Just a quick question you haven't changed the hoses under the bonnet recently as there is a 1 way valve in the break master cylinder hose which if removed causes a whistling noise that goes away when you use the brakes.

Worth a mention as a friend had this issue on his car. Took a while to work out.

 

Also check for stones/grit between the disc and the inner disc protector.

I too regularly have a loud howling noise coming from the front as you described. I returned the car to the car to the garage who could find no fault with the car.

It was only on the journey home I discovered the problem.............The Mrs...................
