Taken turbo shield off my rb5
Hi,need your advise guys...after weeks of putting up with turbo shield rattling around 1.5 to 2.0 revs. I got the garage to take it off. Wanted to know if the turbo sheild is not there would it effect my top mount intercooler or any other parts. It looks so bare now under the Bonnet without the shield. I need your expertise guys as I getting worried that it may damage my engine.

You should get it all wrapped, if you look to see what is above your turbo on the bulkhead you may see where your going to have issues, especially in standing traffic

Nothing to get worried about 90% of scoobs i have seen, unless they are std have had the heatshield removed,as once you fit a bigger turbo:1. They are a swine to refit as the bolts normally snap off.2. wont always fit over the turbo your replacing. As said above you will get a little heat soak in standing traffic, but your brake fluid has a guard in place already. If you want heat wrap you could try this:

This is similar to what is on mine, but is secured with stainless steel ties.

I'd retro fit the MY93-96 'chimney' style heatshield. Gives 3 very decent plus points:-
1) Shields radiating heat from turbo to IC
2) Allows the heat from turbo to escape through chimney (esp. when stationary/crawling speeds)
3) Cools turbo down as air is forced through the chimney, from the IC scoop. (You'll have to make sure the chimney is getting a proper feed from the scoop though...)

Running without heat shielding or wrapping on uppipe, turbo exhaust side, headers and downpipe is unwise. At best the performane is degraded. At worst, if circumstances conspire against you it could cost an engine.
There is also the risk of damage to components in proximity to the hot bits and a soggy clutch from overheated fluid.
